  1. I am confused!!

I dont do alot of burning, but I mainly backup my DVDs.

    Which DVD-R are the best?

I had some white Infiniti, and out of 100 discs, at least 20 went in the trash!

    Datawrite....Red? Yellow? Grey?

I heard that reds are not so good! Whay is the difference between grey and yellow?

Also, what speed 8x or 16x for dvd-r backup?

  2. Most are agreed that the best are Taiyo Yuden blanks. I use them exclusively and have very few problems with bad discs, and those that I do have are usually down to other problems than the discs themselves. Also I also always use 16X discs but burn at 12X, not because I've had bad discs but more as a precaution as I don't believe in pushing things to the limit whether it's discs or PC's (I don't overclock).

I'd agree with Duchess on the recommendation for Taiyo Yuden and to burn slower than the maximum. Verbatim also makes what can be excellent discs, if you can get the ones made in Taiwan. I mail order their DataLifePlus series because it is still made in Taiwan. The Verbatim stuff that goes to the US stores can be made in India and these seem to be somewhat inferior to the made in Taiwan and made in Singapore media they used to sell and now only do through the DataLifePlus series.

Your profile doesn't say where you live, but you should note that in North America the only quality media available now is Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim (assuming you don't get the ones made in India). It used to be really easy to get high quality media here from many companies such as Fuji (used Taiyo Yuden manufactured discs at one time), Sony and TDK, but now they all just sell cheaply made crap discs outsourced to India.

That may be true of shops, but it's not so bad for online buyers. I found this site:
    http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk/
and they offer a wide variety. Granted a lot of them aren't very good, but they're not all junk. There's a good bit of Verbatim in there too. Here in the USA our stores mostly sell junk discs too. Verbatim is hit or miss with some stores having made in Singapore or Taiwan DVD blanks and others maybe only having made in India stuff. That's why I mail order all my media - it's the only way to be sure of what I am getting. Store markups are so high that it's actually cheaper to mail order for me. I could easily pay more for a 50 pack of made in India Verbatim DVDs at Best Buy (one of our big retailers) than I could mail order a 50 pack of their DataLifePlus DVDs which are still made in Taiwan.

Verbatim (MCC coded) are sold in the UK. I have a colleague in UK, and he and I mail content back and forth. We both used Verbatim, and he buys his locally in a store. And for a good price, I hear, not much different than what we pay in $USD for a spindle.
