Would I lose anything if I filmed on a DVX100b, but then for capturing used a cheaper camcorder (a JVC GR-244U to be exact)? This is on Vegas 8, firewire.

That depends whether the camcorder was shooting in normal DV 480i mode or in 24pA mode. Normal mode should play and transfer fine. 24pA mode may not. Experiment with Vegas in 24pA project setting.

Google "24pA" or ask in a Vegas forum

    I probably won't use 24pa, but 24p and 30p definitely.

If shooting 24p with that camcorder you should use the 24pA workflow. Otherwise, you would need to inverse telecine before import to Vegas. Read Adam Wilts report for intro, then consult Vegas Pro forums for project management tips.
