I wanted to convert a DVD video to .avi to play it on my DVD Player (as it does not seem to be able to play it for this zone) and I have a overscan problem. The TV is a standard PAL one and the originally, the DVD is 768 x 576. Now, I always use for some time VirtualDub to convert my DVDs so I will want to use the resize filter. Can somebody suggest me what resolution should I set for the video?

That is a 1:1 resolution, which equates to 720 x 756 at DVD resolutions.
However the resolution is not your problem. Whatever resolution you choose, the player and/or TV will expand it to fill the available space. The only way you can compensate for overscan is to add borders around the outside of the image. usually 3 - 5% is enough to get the bulk of the image back onto the screen.
You do realise that if the DVD had played, you would not have asked this question, and would have quite happily watched the same move with 3 - 5% of the image hidden.Read my blog here.
