I want to get a new player or maybe a new recorder. However I don't have HDMI, only DVI and that's already in use.
The question, Are there any new DVD player/recorders that do good upconverting via component cables?

I think you are out of luck here. Hollyweird doesn't allow upconversion over non-protected output. Here's an exact quote from Oppo on the subject:
"Currently, the DVD player manufacturer's license does not allow high-definition up-converted video output through the component video interface for CSS-encrypted contents. We must comply with this requirement. As a result, all CSS-encrypted contents (almost all commercially pressed DVDs) will be limited to 480i/480p (576i/576p for PAL) output over component."
If you have a good quality HDTV it may actually do a better job of upconverting than a cheap DVD player so there's no real loss to use component anyway.
I have a JVC XV-N650 DVD player that will upscale non-CSS-encrypted DVDR (e.g. your own burned discs) to 720p or 1080i over analog component. I use it with my 1080i CRT "HD-Ready" TV and like the results. It also upscales divx/xvid and MPeg2 from data disk directories.
The player switches itself to 480p if you insert a standard CSS-encrypted store bought DVD.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
Yeah my TV sucks at up converting. Its like a 2nd generation plasma.
My HTIB doesn't do that good either, and it's connected HDMI -> DVI on the TV.
I'm comparing it to known up converted boadcast signals
Note that my original post was not clear at all and I should have explicitly stated that anything without CSS should upscale fine over component, but CSS-encrypted DVDs (commercial discs) won't.

My HTIB (Samsung HT-HDP40) has no troubles playing high bit rate Xvids. Actually it will play pretty much anything I've burned to CD/DVD....It's just getting old and doesn't do that good at upconverting
