The compression is 5:1. The compression is made by your digital camera. I don't think that you can use the DV driver for anything else but a digital camera. Your miniDV tape movie gets exported to your computer through a firewire cable. There should be no loss of quality upon this procedure. A good free program for importing and exporting is DVIO. I have the Sony TRV25 (with analog pass through). I am happy with it so far. But I haven't had it for a long time.

Hi guys. I read this post and have couple of questions about capturing from miniDV camera (JVC DVL 300) Probably you can give me an advice. The problem is that I am getting green and red mosaic in every two minutes or so when capturing with Premiere6.1. And these bad frames are 1 or 2 every time.Iam using MS Avi format for capture. My computer is Pentium 3 550 MHZ HD is 60 Gig 7200 rpm. I couldn't figure out what fire wire card I am using although in hardware manager it says Texas Instruments I guess, Ya and the operating system is win 2000 server. Any suggestions please!!!

My system has recently developed this problem too. On reading my camcorders manual (Canon MV500i) it sounded like dirt on the tape heads but I also get this with the AV to DV pass-through mode so that can't be the problem. I've tried different capture software and a different DV codec with no luck. I have transferred several hours worth of DV AVI to my PC in the past without this problem. It only started a few days ago.

I use to do all this same stuff, Got smart and quit dumping money in a computer, bought a Panasonic DMR E-20 Home DVD recorder for $699, problems solved, anything I record from looks just like the source in the 2hr. mode(5000 bitrate) and the 1hr(9000 bitrate) is breathtaking, this includes Hi8mm, 8mm, VHS, SVHS or any of the other digital sources out there I care ti copy or backup from and its a DVD-R and DVD-Ram recorder. I pay $3 for top brand of DVD-R's and $6 for Rams. Never record another VCD or SVCD again, why should I go backwards in quality.
FYI - In case you are wondering yes a 2 hr copy I made on the recorder copies of great again as another 2 hr copy, maybe a 10% drop in quality the 2nd time around. All this while viewing an a 46 big screen and 36in tv. -

This is with a generic $20 tv capture card.
However, when I decided to switch to DVD format, 720x480, although I did not drop but maybe < 1% frames, the quality degraded enormously.
My WinTV PVR should be arriving today or tomorrow (hardware mpeg2 encoding), and I will let you know how well it performs.
Anyone with WinTV PVR ( http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvr_datasheet.htm ) capture card, would you tell me your findings as well?
cheers,

Finally solved my mosaic block problem.
After hours of tweaking my system from the BIOS to juggling my PCI cards around, it turns out my firewire cable was faulty !
I was about to try a new firewire card but borrowed a cable to try first and this fixed the problem. The old one must have been sending the firewire card a poor signal.
