  1. I can open all 4 of my MOV test files with VLC. But only 3 open in MPC. With the other, MPC has to be forcibly closed.

The 3 that do open are from a digicam and in MPC>Properties I see:
    Video: JPEG 848x480 30.00fps [video 0]
    Audio: PCM 8000Hz mono 64Kbps [audio 1]

Of course, I cant examine the Properties of the unco-operative file with MPC, and VLC doesn't have any equivalent feature. But MediaInfo says it has a video stream called 'Sorenson 3'.

Nor can I open this file in IrfanView, yet I'm sure I could do so yesterday. I suspect it might be something to do with the fact that I have installed and uninstalled Quicktime Alternative. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on please?

  2. MPC is a directshow player, so you need a directshow decoder to play videos. The most common is ffdshow, you probably have to enable sorenson 3 and possible MJPEG as well in the ffdshow configuration (should read "libavcodec" instead of "disabled")

Players like VLC, MPlayer, KMPlayer have all filters and decoders internally contained, and are not dependent on external ones.

You may need a .mov splitter as well, I think there is one installed with QT Alternative

  3. Many thanks, much appreciate your help. I find that ffdshow extremely daunting so would be grateful if you'd stick with me for a bit longer please.

I think I've correctly made the changes you suggested (in Video Config) but that MOV file still crashes MPC.

But a more general question now arises out of studying the ffdshow lists. The great bulk of my codecs seem to be Disabled, unlike yours. I'm not now sure whether that's down to me (it's ages since I first installed ffdshow, and I've never understood it) or some sort of initial default that I've never changed. But in either case, should I now enable all of them? Are there likely to be any nasty side effects of that?

  4. Don't enable things that you don't need to. There is more potential for conflicts & problems. I only have so many things on my "test" system which has lots of garbage installed.

I already mentioned you probably need a .mov splitter, a decoder itself is insufficient. You might have to enable MJPG as well (disabled in your screenshot, underlined in my screenshot).

To determine what filters are being used on your system to render the file, open it up in graph studio or graph edit.

    Try reinstalling quicktime alternative.

I don't think haali media splitter has complete support for .mov. Gabest .mp4 splitter I think might support .mov. I have QT pro installed, so it uses Apple Media Handler even with MPC

If you still have problems, post the mediainfo information here (view=>text)

OK, I'll leave it as it stands at present.

OK, but I'm out of my depth here! What is a '.mov splitter' and why would I need one. If I'd got one, what would I do with it? Presumably, split my MOV file?

Yes, I had done that too - I took screenshot prematurely.

To determine what filters are being used on your system to render the file, open it up in graph studio or graph edit.
OK, duly installed both programs. Graphstudio just gave "Could not open file". GraphEdit gave:
Could not construct a graph from this file.
    - Have you installed all necessary filters?
    - Note that the 'Render File' menu option cannot render *.GRF files.
No combination of filters could be found to render the stream. (Return code: 0x80040218)

    Try reinstalling quicktime alternative.
I may give that a try but the reason I uninstalled it so promptly was that it seemed to screw up my file associations. I was getting all sorts of odd behaviour with the Open With dialog.

If it's going to involve much more effort I'll drop it, as the file is not really important. It's just irksome that I don't know why it won't open - I hate unsolved puzzles
