  1. Can anyone recommend a reliable, easy-to-use, preferably free method of converting the MOV files I sometimes get from a friend's digicam to a widely usable format please?

I am currently having some success experimenting with the conversion software SUPER from eRight at http://www.erightsoft.net/SupCk2.html
But sometimes the result fails to allow the audio track to be played. And I'm out of my depth with many of the options in SUPER anyway. Such as whether or not to enable 'MEncoder' or 'ffmpeg', and whether to leave the audio output set to MP2 (default) or MP3. So if there's a simpler, no-brainer method of getting MOV to MPEG2 or AVI then I'm keen to try it please.

I would try Xvid4PSP, which is a pretty strong converter. The original files are most likely mjpeg compressed in a quicktime (MOV) container. You may need to have either quicktime alternative or ffdshow to make sure you can get full playback for the converter.
