  1. i have a boxing match that was mpeg 2,,when i encoded the first time with h263 there was a lot of blocks in the picture,,so changed to mpeg using xvid btw and the picture came out really nice and smooth,,i always thought that h263 was better for encoding,,so what makes that difference between them,,thanks

    Do you mean h264?
And what converter and settings are you using?

  3. h.263 is meant for low quality, low bandwidth situations like old video phones.

  4. no h263,,inside of xvids configs,,,so then using the mpeg quants is always better??i added a hard drive to my 360 or philips,,so am trying to shrink some stuff into xvids,,mainly dvds,,am using winavi and vdub,,because they offer alittle more than autogk does,,like bit rate control and sizing,,,anyway sorry to lead off topic there,,,so should i not use h263 anymore??stick with the mpeg quan then?

Stick with xvid or try h264.

You're talking about the quantization matrices in the Xvid codec. The MPEG matrix is a little sharper than the h.263 matrix. The MPEG matrix is more prone to macroblock artifacts because of this. You must have made some other changes if you see a big difference.

  8. so which one of those should i use?? when the h263 was used it looked like a bunch of squared pixel sections over the whole vid,,but was gone when went to the mpeg one,,thanks btw

  9. If you want a sharper image with more macroblocks use MPEG. If you want a less sharp image with fewer macroblocks use h.263. h.263 does cause a little more macrblocking and posterization in smooth gradients.

As I said earlier, if you saw major differences in the amount of macroblocks something else was different, not just the matrix.
