  1. Hello, all. Happy Labor Day Weekend.

I'm having a problem with Windows Explorer & libavcodec.dll. Whenever I go to a directory with an AVI file in it, I'm getting a "Windows Explorer needs to shutdown" error box, and the message points to my libavcodec.dll file as the culprit.

This is a recent problem and I think I know the cause. I installed and uninstalled a crappy piece of software called "Tunebite", which monkeyed around with my codec structure.

Any ideas for solving the libavcodec glitch?

    Thanks!

  2. You can try uninstalling tunebite? or use a restore point if enabled

If that fails, try uninstalling/reinstalling codecs

  3. Hi, pdr. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I thankfully chucked Tunebite, and it was during the uninstall that things went wrong. The damn thing is junk!

I guess I'll try a reinstall of my codecs. (Windows Restore always seems to cause six problems for every one it solves.)

It could be the thumbnail feature in Explorer causing problems. When you open a folder of AVIs, Explorer tries to generate a thumbnail for each video. It seems to be easy to cause problems with that feature, though.

Open a Run box, and enter 'regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll' (without the quotes). That should disable the thumbnail feature; see if it helps. If not, open the Run box again, and enter the same command - but this time, don't include the '/u'. That'll re-enable the feature.

libavcodec.dll is a part of ffdshow, I think. Not that I'm recommending uninstalling ffdshow just yet, but if you do have it installed, you can always try completely uninstalling it, then either seeing if the problem goes away, and/or getting the latest version and (re)installing that.

  5. Ai Haibara,
I know this is an old message, but if you are still using this message board, i registered here just to say thank you! And thank you topoisondeathray also.

The fix suggested in this thread worked perfectly. I followed the instructions given by Ai Haibara and i ran the command 'regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll'. But that alone did not fully fix the problem. I also visited the website for ffdshow and downloaded and installed the latest version of the software. Then i re-started my PC and now its working 100% again!

I'm very grateful to you guys for excellent and helpful advice. I had this problem on my PC for the last 2 years and i must have spent an un-countable number of hours trying to fix it. But now its completely fixed 100%.

Thank you guys for the help and support!
    John.

Glad I could be of some help.

You've lived with the problem (so to speak) for the past two years?

  7. Ai Haibara,
Yes, roughly 2 years. For the last 2 years i have not been able to get into the "My Documents" folder on my PC. I had a kind of get-a-round worked out that allowed me to view the files in My Documents and if i quickly clicked the file, it would open but windows explorer would shut down. I tried so many things, i Googled so many different search words to find a way of stopping it, with no success........ Until now

Ai Haibara you help people who are in trouble. Its no different to what happens in the real world. To make an analogy, its like as if i had crippling back pain for the last two years, and you preformed a miracle and cured me

    Thank you,
    John in Ireland.
