Did you format in NFTS of FAT32? FAT32 does not support file sizes above 1g.

  6. I never, EVER, use HD setup tools that are foreign to the OS unless it is absolutely mandatory. Very sound and solid reasons for this policy have been repeatedly demonstrated over a long period of time.

You may just have a bad drive, or a problem with that particular channel, or the cable. These things are possibilities, one certainty is that the drive is NOT setup the way the OS, that would be the software responsible for reading from, and writing to, the drive, would have done it.

  7. go to the seagate website and get their disc checking software. sounds like it's defective to me. the software should give you the error code and then you can get an rma.

    Follow up.
Went back to Comp USA to get drive tested, he said drive tested ok.
I ask him if he tranfered any large files, he said he could only test with small files but assured me drive is OK.
Reinstalled drive, still locked up during large file transfer.
Exchanged for new drive, it worked perfect.
PS: All disk check software showed defective drive to be OK
