I recently purchased a Sony DVP-FX720 and forgot to check before purchasing it if it could be regionally unlocked and at present there is none available. I have a large collection of region 1 DVD’s from living in the US, if I rip the DVD’s to DivX will if remove the region restriction?

Divx/Xvid has not region restriction, so it is a moot point. Ripping the discs and reburning them will remove the region restriction.

However Sony are notorious for producing single format players as well, and presenting error messages that look like region issues when in fact they are format related.

Bottom line - are you sure it will also play back NTSC videos ? If not, unlocking the player won't make playback any easier, and converting to Divx will have to including converting to PAL framerates, which will be messy.
