Some mp3 files cannot be opened by Sony Sound Forge software. [error message: Warning: An error occurred during the current operation. The file is an unsupported format.]

Yet they open fine in say, Adobe Audition. If even a fraction of it is cut then the mp3 file saved (with the same properties), it then opens fine in Sony Sound Forge.

I'm just curious what could cause the file to behave like this. It is not listed as 'protected' under properties.

Get a copy of EncSpot and see if you can spot a common thread (i.e. encoder used, VBR -vs- CBR, header type, etc.). That's what I'd do, anyway.

Depends on the version of SoundForge but Sony checks registration status each time you open an MP3 file. Only one computer can be registered. If you install to a second machine, MP3 won't open.

Hi edDV. My Sony Sound Forge is registered on only one machine and is working fine. It does open the same .mp3 file as soon as I first open/edit/save it in another application.

I'm just saying it may be related to codec activation. You might call Sony support or try to reinstall and reactivate SoundForge.

Hm... these are two .mp3 files next to each other, one opens, the other does not...

The one that does not suddenly can be opened if saved with another application, clearly indicating that the other application has stripped something off of the .mp3 file, allowing it to now open.

Good news - Bad news situation:
GN: Sony has acknowledged this as a bug in Soundforge 8.
BN: Soundforge 8 is now no longer updated.

The file can be opened by Soundforge 9.0d and 9.0e. It turns out the problem file has extra header info.

I also found a workaround today: Using freeware MP3 Repair Tool http://www.drtag.de/en/description_mp3rt.htm to remove one single frame (26ms) from the affected file, "fixes" the problem.

Is there any way to strip header info without taking out the first 26ms frame?
