The GOTO function is just as good, if not, the same as resume. I think the firmware is perfect and personally I can't think of anything else that could be added.

Though it would be nice to have 8 displayed files in the browser while skipping 8 at a time, then again, this has been said it can't be done.

  2. Apparently, The Philips DVP5990/37 Has Video Resolution Limits With AVI-Files (At Least) Since An Error ("Video Resolution Not Supported") Occurs When Certain AVI-Files (Example, 768 x 576 Resolution) Are Played. Just Wondering -- Can Firmware Be Created For The Philips DVP5990/37 Which Would Safely Allow Higher AVI-File Video Resolutions? If Not, Can Anyone Suggest An OK Video Resolution Program Which Will Easily (And Quickly) "Down-Convert" (And/Or "Re-encode") AVI-Files?

I flashed my brother-in-laws new 5990 with the DVP5990_37_vb6_v1_2 firmware, added a 320GB USB drive and 485 Xvid/Divx video files. The long filename display is a big plus and the text is much easier to read. He's very happy.

    Thanks, vb6rocod

I used this comment/tutorial from bwd777 to prepare the SATA USB drive in an external enclosure: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/philips-dvp-5990/9370?#70038 Works very well. And thanks, bwd777

If you have the know-how, I would like to request that PAL and MULTI be restored to the TV TYPE menu in your unofficial firmware (unless someone knows a remote control hack to switch TV Types).

As the "struck-through" post earlier in the thread mentions, Philips have "forced" their American players to be NTSC-only for the last year or so. On my old 5982, I was able to find a remote control hack to at least make the player MULTI (you open the tray and press the "3" on the remote. You'll see MULTI in the upper-left corner).

When I try this hack on my 5990, it simply says NTSC. Only thing I can think is Philips thought that hack was too easy to do and changed it to something else?

Any way you can put MULTI and PAL back in the TV TYPE menu (or point me to a remote hack that will at least enable MULTI)?

I even tried upgrading to official foreign firmware (downloaded the Australian one) and changed the file's name to make my player accept it. Firmware installed, but it still behaves like a US player (with NTSC being the only selectable option).

I had bought the 5990 for its USB 2.0, but since I plan to get an LCD TV in a few years, and plan to shop around for one that is multi-standard (I know they're not common, but among LCDs, you can find some PAL-capable ones out there without having to go to an multi-system specialist), I may just buy another 5982 so that my PAL DVDs won't be forced to undergo an unnecessary standards conversion.

If it's a simple remote-control hack (like making it multi region), I can live with that and I'm sure there are at least a few other people here who would appreciate the "hint", but if it's something that can only be accomplished by modifying the firmware, then yes, if you can, please include it in a future release of your 5990/37 (US) firmware.

    Best Regards!

  10. Hi,

I just tried out this firmware, and it's very good.

I wonder if it is possible to make the following enhancements:

    - Is there a way to add a "shuffle" mode for Music/Video files. Surprised that it's not there. You may also want to have a "folder" shuffle mode that does a shuffle for files in the current folder.

    - According to the following link:

    hxxp://www.forodvp5100.com.ar/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1543

(Change hxxp to http to view the page)

it mentions that you can press the ANGLE key to change the effect when viewing JPEG pictures. It doesn't seem to work with the 5990/37. There are messages in the firmware for this from what I can see. Is there any way to enable it?

    Thanks,

    Jon

  11. Modding questions:

    build 1.2.1:

    1. Why does Data Part | OSD | OSD 1 Visuals | Fonts | Font 7 have both green and blue portions? The font uses 2 bits per pixel, right? Are both green and blue invisible? If so, can one color be used to make 3 values available for the visible bitmap?

    2. What are the icon size/depth limits?

    3. What is the icon "invisible" color?

    4. What are icons 59-61?

    5. Do icons flow dynamically if their sizes change?

    6. Is Data Part | Skin | MPEG 2 just a background image?

    7. Does Data Part | Skin | MPEG 1 have any function or is it unused?

    Stock firmware:

    1) Is it possible to lengthen the filenames in the stock firmware to have the default 8 lines without JPEG preview or to allow the text to flow over the preview pane?

I can't add new feature to firmware, sorry, that's all I can do for you.
And I can not believe that I am the only one who knows how to mod a firmware....

Oh, yes, I was aware of that, I just remember on my 5982, there was a remote hack/shortcut that enabled me to switch the player into MULTI mode (bypassing the TVTYPE menu) and that for some reason, Philips decided to remove this (or reassing it to another key combo?) in the 5990.

Of course, having it in the TVTYPE menu (where it really belongs) is preferable anyway!

    Enjoy,

Many, many thanks! I will try this out tonight on my multi-system TV.

I know there's another poster lurking around who was wanting such a modification for his 5992. Can he use the same firmware file you provided above (maybe he'd just have to change the file's name to match his player?). I'm thinking of the guy who struck-through his message in this thread.

Again, thanks a lot! Wish I knew how to do this myself (and if it could be easily done on my Macintosh). I'm a graphics-design guy, not a programmer, so I'd probably be out of my depth anyway!

    Vb6,
If you are not the only one, then at least you are one of the very few knowledgeable ones who can even do this.

I thank you for taking time to build this wonderful software and even more for taking time to answer all of our questions and even acommodating some of our requests.

Guys like you make me believe whenever I have questions, there's always someone on-line who has answers. Thanks again for your effort.

    Vb6 or anyone with knowledge,
Is it possible to have DVP5990 read Korean subtitle? I looked under subtitle menu and I couldn't find Korean language as a selection. It did have "Other language" but I didn't know what code is used for Korean. Thanks in advance.

How difficult whould be to implement unicodeToCP1251 for 5990/37 in order to support cyrillic filenames in FileBrowser?
I will appreciate any help or information how I can implement this myself.

The big problem is that this will work only for files from CD/DVD not from USB....

Many thanks to vb6rocod for his work.

Have recently purchased a 5990 at Wal-Mart. It says on box supports USB 2.0. Some here say that is true, others say not true. Which way is it please?

Also, I have a 642 that has firmware that allows to play thru my VCR without the macro color shift.

Is there a firmware for the 5990 that would allow the same? 8)

Main reason for purchase is to allow playing of divx or vob thru the USB using flash drive or fat32 HD. Will that work
    on the 5990?

    Thanks

These are a few question regarding DVP5992 and the latest firmware upgrade from "vb6rocod"
    1) In the zip file I see 2 files, which one should I be installing
    2) I heard that DVP5992 has a restriction of 250 folder and 650 files for view. Does this firmware let me see more / all files in my drive
    3) I have a portable hard drive of 250GB (no power source by itself). Does DVP5992 support it?
Your responses would be much appreciated
    Regards

5990 (and 5992) is definitely USB 2.0, so no worries there!

I should be possible too, because 5990 firmware has (limited) support for LFN entries of VFAT and FAT32, which is UNICODE. There must be some place to hook up unicodeToCP function. However, it is possibile that mediatek just ignores upper portion of unicode character.

You have right, I make this "patch", you may check this in 5990_37, it's for 1252, and for this case most "special char." are like 0x00ab and position in table is 0x00ab. For 1251 unicod is 0x04ab but position in char table is 0x00cd (cd <> ab). And it's true (i check this) for usb high byte is ignore and for this reason you get "strange" char. from usb.
This patch was original make by Vladimir Boroda, a "guru", who make firmware for 5960 (also make his famous ISO resume).

vb6rocod, correct me if I'm wrong, but this poster should simply be able to use your 5990 firmware, right? I think all he'd have to do is simply change the file name from 5990_37.bin to 5992_37.bin, right? (I thought I read somewhere that both players use the same firmware).

If this is the case, the only thing you need to put on the CD is that .bin file (and renamed to reflect your different model number).

He should probably wait for confirmation from vb6rocod or someone else just to be on the safe side.

It's not necessary, 5990 and 5992 (37 or 37b) use the same firmware 5990_37.bin, so use 5990_37.bin for your player.
If you download official update from Philips (model 5992) you will see this.
    http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp5992_37/dvp5992_37_fus_aen.zip

And make update from USB, is more easy... (of course you can make this also from CD).
