That's precisely my question. What firmware is needed for files larger than 2GB.

    No NTFS? Really? Why?

The 5990 will play files up to 4GB with no problem. The 4GB file size is a limitation of the FAT32 file system. NTFS requires licensing and most Divx type set top players just use FAT32 instead to avoid the fees, AFAIK. No fix for that. FAT32 is common with USB thumb drives also.

  3. I tried to do the firmware upgrade for my dvp 3962 and it ended up freezing on me, it started, ejected the disc, and was froze up for half an hour. I painfully unplugged it and plugged it back in, now its bricked. The screen is blue and it says its on, but nothing happens, no controls work on the dvd player. Is there anyway to save it and if there is what will i need?

The firmware and player work so far besides the orange screen annoyance when using an hdmi connection. The solution for the orange screen of death is to unplug the device for a couple of seconds/minutes and the picture returns to normal. The problem is that the orange screen of death keeps reappearing the next day. I thought if I did this, it would go away forever. Perhaps I have to keep it unplug for hours? Because when I plug the player back, my personal settings in the firmware are still there. For those in this thread who have experience the orange screen of death, how long did you unplug your player for?

I usually unplug it for about half an hour.

The HDMI cable you're using may also play a role in how often you see it (maybe the equipment on the other end, too, but I'm not dragging the player and cable to other TVs in the house just to test that :P). The first HDMI cable I was using with the player was cheaper and fairly long, so I saw the problem show up a bit more often. After replacing it with a slightly better and much shorter cable, I only see it every once in a while (and it does seem like it may be triggered by something my TV's doing, as well (I know it's primarily due to the player, though.))

Unplugged it and tried a new hdmi cable and it goes away for a day or two then comes back. I'm thinking of keeping it on standby/screensaver mode to avoid this problem.

  7. Thanks man. I update my 2 5990/37 dvd players with your custom firmware and really like the improvements. Is there an improved codec pack installed?

The decoding is handled by the 5990's hardware, for the most part, so the firmware doesn't have too much control over it.

  9. I downloaded the firmware 4.1 and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
    I downloaded DVP5990_37_vb6_v4_1_1.rar.
There is one .bin file. Can I burn it to dvd or does it have to be a cd?
I tried a dvd and the player came up with unkown disc.
    Thanks for any help!

The .bin file must be in the root folder of a data disc, as a regular file (in other words, just place the .bin in the root directory, just as you would any other file). It's easier to just copy the .bin file to the root directory of a USB flash drive. (Note that if you burn the file to a CD or DVD with videos, the player will see it every time you insert that disc and stop to ask you if you want to update.)

Make sure you follow the directions given in the first post on the first page of this topic, exactly, when attempting to update the 5990. (Come to think of it, your player IS a 5990, right? I should also make sure you have the right firmware for your player.)

  11. yes it is the 5990_37. If I am starting off with a blank dvd, should I just put the .bin file on the disc like a I would an .avi or divx file or do I need to set it up differently?
    Quote Quote
  12. Nope, just put it in the root, like the other fellow mentioned. Better yet, use a memory stick/thumb drive, this way you're not wasting discs and you can just erase the bin off said drive. Cheers.

Yes. Write it to the disc like you would an .avi/.divx file, but it has to be in the root (base) folder of the disc. Are you sure you want to use a blank DVD, though? It's a bit of a waste, IMO.

  14. Hey folks. this has likely been discussed before, and if so please forgive me.

I'm about to purchase a 1 terabyte external for my DVP5990. Now, a computer tech dude told me to go with a Seagate model because he says he's never had problems with them. I'm taking a glance at some drives here

    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Descri...rdrive&x=0&y=0

but many of the reviews don't seem to be too kind.

Is there a chance of getting any reccomendations from you kind folk? Last I remember talking about it in this forum I was told that I need to have a "powered drive" and not hope to use the USB 2.0 on the player to power the thing. After that, my old and foggy bean doesn't remember poo.
    Cheers,

  15. Buy.com has a 2 tb Fantom drive on sale today for about $100 with free shipping.

    http://www.buy.com/prod/fantom-drives-g-force-2tb-esata-usb-2-0-hard-drive-32mb-cache-...215744653.html

I've had a fantom now for more then a year without issues. Our dvd player crapped out about a year ago though, and now I've got my fantom plugged into my pc, and we stream 720p hd video to our ps3 from it as our current media solution.

Thanks Gareee, but I need FAT32 os. Maybe a stupid question but can I just format this bugger and slap FAT32 on it? And what software would I need to do such a thing. Damn straight this is a good price, but It doesn't look like it's available to Canadian customers.

  17. Looks like a standard windows reformat to me:

    http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/hard-drive-support/339701-reformat-nt...-hd-fat32.html

I'd call them, and see if you can just order one that way. That is a killer price for that large an external hd.

  18. Hell, same unit at Newegg.ca is like $179.00 + 12.95 shipping. Oh, and of course, tax. 2X the price. Man, we are getting burned as consumers in Canada.

  20. Yeah. Something I have to know on a daily basis, how our dollars reflect one and other. We've been pretty par-ish most of this season. Like I said, we are getting burned.

I can have things ordered into Maine and pick them up, as we sometimes do for business. Maybe I should see if anyone's heading up there this week.

All things considered, G, thanks for the heads up on this deal. I may still snag one yet.

Yeah man, I think I'll grab one, but I was a bit wierded out when I read, "Quiet fanfree design." Another neophyte question . . . how does the bugger stay cool?

  23. Honestly, I never even looked at it. I plugged it in, turned it on, and just started using it. I don't think I've turned it off for a few months now.

We almost have 1 tb filled now, and I'll probably buy a second 2 tb version. While I have a ton of dvds, we hardly watch them now.. instead we just download 720p posted replacements for them off the net. Since botht the sound and video are much better then dvds, or dvd collection is just now gathering dust.

Wow! At That Rate ($100/mb), 2 TB Of HD Memory May Have Cost About $200M (In 1988) - Instead Of The Present $105 (In 2010).

  29. Just found pretty much the same deal on a WD 2TB external and in Canada. Problem getting the other one: the site didn't like the Canadian addresss and the US ship-to address confusion. Maybe just because they have a Canadian site as well, who knows.

This WD has a warrrenty of 1 yr parts/labour, and one has to purchase an extended warrenty for ANY replacement. $17.00/yr, 26 2yr.

Maybe it's just me but I thought drives had longer warrenties than a year. Anyone know more about this than me?

    Edit: Found this page . . .

    http://support.wdc.com/warranty/policy.asp

Still gives me the heebies grabbing a drive with a one year warranty. The drive in question is part of the Elements series.

edit #2: Eh, bugger it, got the bloody thing. Lots of good reviews at Am-ozone.scum. Sorry for the blithering. Have a good weekend wherever ye' might be.

  30. How can I confirm that I've successfully installed the new firmware? I downloaded DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_CD_Logo.rar and put the disc in, and the logo changed to the "CD" version, so I know *something* happened, but when I do the key sequence to check the FW version, it still says "37.08.51.31. Shouldn't that last number change to "32"?
