Because new version 2 have "unknown" problems I make some change on version 1_2_1:

New font with outline for OSD, SETUP (must be like in V2 version).
Full Unicode support for ISO+Joliet / USB (Thanks to shoora).
Add for TV Type PAL and Multi, but NTSC is default.
Move few pixels subtitles to left.
Two version with and without volume on Repeat keys.

how i sad before, changing FONT1 in this firmware with FONT1 from philips original firmware - change OSD language to russian without any non-russian symbols.
But now there is only russian language in OSD, and if we try to change it to ENG or any other - OSD language don't change - and still be russian. So, it is not critically for us, because we need only russian language, but i tell you about this beacuse it may be a bug. if there is no bug, then all ok.

now with DVP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2.rar with another FONT1 we have russian OSD and rus|eng file names in file browser.

what can be file name length in file browser from USB FAT32 in DVP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2. i have 14 chars (but here on that forum i see that lenght is 25 chars). or ours VP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2 not have same fix?

Do you test this version?
Unicode support is to show all special characters from your language (not only basic latin alphabet). Of course for US that's not need, but I want to make for other language.

but russian language is in firmware. it's "language 9 [08]" from language list. language 9 uses FONT1[00-01] thats why i change FONT1

Also pople reportsabout problem (i don tested it myself) (on original firmware was ok they say)
when try to load DVD+R disk then player shutdown. if DVD-R there was no problem. DVD+RW works too.

in file browser, file names and files are displayed OK. (But i change FONT4 on another same-like font(more bright font))

also i can fill table list myself, you do your hard work and i dont want ask you to do it...

it's a pity if be v1_2_2 (higher version is better as usually), but if now another way. But in any case its more better then we have. thanks

I still wait a test with DVR+, I have an "bad feeling".
More files... I try few time ago, and work 90%... still have a bug when return from folder > 4, return is like in case with 4 files. This bug is present (from what I know) in all mod philips firmware (5980K). To make this 100% I need C source (original).

Maybe you have "courage" to test v2_2_OSD.

So, how i said higher(yesterday i wrote about v2_2_OSD but copy|paste not that text), v2_2_OSD works fine. Works all without DVD+ (how you said). And there was 1 mistake in char table, wich was corrected by LEONard3.(2 letter look like each other)

DVD+ in v_1_2_2 and all other works fine (like in originall firmware)

p.s. vb6rocod, may i ask you about how and with you open firmware to edit char map... For exsample, if phillips will give us new version of firmware (like 5996/51_33) it will be new version without rus. lang. and pathes, and we will need to be asking you to make fixes. so if you can tell how we can modify firmware, we will not disturb you, you already make so hard work for us, and other people.
or we may ask your help again?

Fix OSD char "Фф".
A "bigger" font for File Browser.
Change font "Large", now is for cyrillic. Change Medium (new) with Large.
I put in archive ini file to use in MTKFontcreator for OSD font.

I have the philips DVP5992 and was trying to play a ripped DVD off the USB stick. The video works fine. The problem is audio. The files on a burned DVD have AC 5.1 sound, but when played on the philips DVP5992 via the USB 2.0 port it only gives me the option for 2.1 sound. Any one know a way around this problem. I'd prefer to use the USB stick rather than burn DVDs

Also When running VOB files off the USB stick, the player does not recognize them as a movie..meaning there is no way to navigate the menu, like you would on a normal DVD. I just have to skip through it. Any way to solve this problem on USB?

I've tested the last firmware 1_2_2 and i dont know what full unicode means ,because the romanian characters are not recognized and it's not loading any sub files(different names for subtitle and movies), and the meniu is the same with 1_2_1 version ,not like the 2_2.
So I say that the 2_2 version is the best ,(I have maybe 10 dvd+R, so the fact that not recognize this type does not affect me too much).

I have 5992/37 player and was having trouble with "KOREAN" subtitle.

I installed DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_2.rar firmware now,
and tried smi, srt, and vobsub(idx/sub) subtitles, but non of them worked.
smi and srt gave broken characters, and vobsub gave nothing...(I've tried
different options for bitmap color settings).

Today, I tried AVIAddXSubs with not much expectations.
However it worked! Interestingly, it displayed KOREAN subtitle with
different font style which I specified with AVIAddXSubs.
(when I played the same file on my computer, it gives out designated font style)

so, I am happy, but wondering what's going on...
just looking at the firmware, it doesn't look like have full KOREAN character set
with it, then how come it can display korean font with different style?

because there were a couple of differnent kinds of subtitles on my computer,
when I use AVIAddXSub.

For Vobsub is VERY IMPORTANT to select PAL for movie with 25fps, OR NTSC for 23,976 or 29,97fps

I noticed when I play DIVX in 1080i mode with HDMI, different movies displayed like they moved to the bottom of the screen. Top 1/3 of the screen is black and picture is bellow that. Works fine with composite connections. Is HDMI messed up on my player?

I have a similar problem using DVI->HDMI into my Hitachi TV. Composite works fine but the digital out gives screwy results. Upon powering on the 5992 the screen is shifted halfway to the left in 1080i mode (with differing screen size/position errors depending on resolution). The menu and DVDs also are half a screen to the left, but when I play anything from the USB port, the problem fixes itself, and then the menu and DVDs play fine.

After digging online and talking with Hitachi tech support, there is no record of this happening with the player or with the TV. I have never tried the original 5992 firmware as the first thing I did upon purchase was update it with vb6's. Do you have this problem regardless of the firmware you have installed? I wonder if anyone else can shed some light on this bug.

first many thanks to @vb6rocod for the work you have done for us all, it is very much appreciated & one of the reasons I bought this particular player.

Please could you consider the following things if you have time for more development.

1). When displaying jpg files the player seems to load the picture, then after it is loaded the transition to display the picture is very long. Could this transition effect be removed please? When the picture starts to be displayed, pressing <forward> shows the picture instantly, but the drawback with this is that the next picture is then displayed automatically. I think the best behaviour might be that the next picture is always loaded but not displayed until <forward> is pressed, at which time it could be displayed instantly.

2). The file list only contains 4 items although it looks as if more could be displayed in the space, more files being displayed would make navigation easier.

3). When displaying lists (like the file list) could the cursor continue to move if the key is held in please? Instead of the current behaviour that means the key has to be pressed repeatedly.

I have the 5990/12 I am posting in this thread because it seems to be the most current, I hope this is ok
