I encode my videos to be played on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in Xvid with AC3 audio and I was just wondering what the max B-frames these consoles can handle. So far I have been using 2 for my max B-frames and everything plays fine and looks good but I would like to push the PS3 & Xbox 360 to their limits.

So does anyone know or have a link to a page that has details on all the Xvid settings for the PS3 and Xbox 360?

I use MeGui for all my encodings

    Thanks for your time

  2. You could test this for yourself in a few minutes.

  3. Woo - reviving this old thread with some info

I just downloaded a couple of avis encoded with XviD (MPEG-4), and they both stuttered terribly on my Xbox 360 (Slim, latest dash as of writing with the media playing update). My Xbox plays lots of Xvid MPEG-4 avis, but not these ones.

I used GSpot to take a deep look at things, and both of these videos used B-VOP (aka B-Frames) with a max consecutive of 3 B-Frames. My other XviDs all used a max consecutive of 2.

I recoded these vids into AVC with 2 B-Frames, and they play just fine now (and are smaller files with no noticable quality difference).

So perhaps that's your answer for the Xbox 360 - it maxes out at 2 B-Frames.

Disclaimer: I know basically nothing about video coding and the above 'experiment' is far from scientific

  4. Try encoding again with 3 bframes. I suspect it will play. Ie, the problem with the original file probably wasn't the number of bframes. Just a guess.
