Hello,
I want to rip a dvd to a filesize of about 700 - 1Gb in size with the best quality I can get.
Is there a guide how to do that?
I guess I need to know (among others) the following:
Resolution:
Bitrate:
Codec:
Thanks
Thomas

So you don't care if the quality is good, just the best you can squeeze out of it at that size ?
If quality is foremost, do a constant quality encode and don't worry so much about the output size. Use a quantizer value of between 2 and 3 and a wdith or 640 and the result should be very good.
Anything else is a compromise, often a big one. You can get higher quality for a given bitrate by using a lower resolution, but then you lose that quality when you play it back if you need to enlarge it, as the resize will be much bigger. If you use a larger resolution so you don't have to resize it as much, you will get a lower quality encode to begin with.
Then, just when you think you have found a magic number, you suddenly realise that it varies from movie to movie, as the content plays a big part in how a video compresses and what numbers work best.
Personally, I would start by using AutoGK for the encoding, as it makes life very simple. Then use DVD Shrink to create a short segment of a DVD - say 5 minutes worth. Finally, use AutoGK to encode the same material several times (it batches, so this is easy), using different quality values (AutoGK uses a % system, start at 75 and go up) versus different resolutions for fixed sizes. Look at the results and play your final encode based on these results.
I would try to give you some estimates on how long this would take, but your computer details are gibberish, so somewhere between 20 minutes and 4 days would be my guess.Read my blog here.
