    That's about tag's on tv.
Believe me, only someone like New_Age and only with "original source code" in C can make this.
Try here, maybe you have success.http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mt13x9/messages

Did I say there´s anything wrong with the firmware? No, I didn't. I just said that I had some issues with it and was wondering if anyone had some thoughts as to what is at fault here. No need to rude about it.

D'oh! You can install the firmware from USB just fine! It has nothing to do with the fact that after flashing the hacked firmware (from whatever medium) the filebrowser won't display more than 25 chars if you playback files from USB and 40 from disc.

  6. Some change:

    - new position for vertical, lower position for "Large" font. Also first 10 step are with 4px/step, last with 6px/step. This can usefully for custom zoom from TV (Zoom1 or cine), special for users with Plasma TV. Maxim is now 72px (level 16).
    - full support for unicode (ISO+Joliet and USB) for all CP. (Thanks to shoora).
    - a bigger font for "Large" for CP 1253 and 1254 (Thanks to MTZ)
    - move subtitles a little to left
    - Volume + - on Repeat keys.
    - For "Dark Grey" background is "semi-transparent"
    - All language in OSD Language

    For CP 1250, 1251, 1252, 1253 and 1254.

I put DVP5990_12_vb6_v6_1 on my 5990 and everything is OK except length of file/directory names. It displays just 25 characters.... Shoult it be more?

    Hi,

I just upgraded to the latest 5990/12 (1252) version. The upgrade went very well and I like the new layout very much.

However I'm a bit disappointed by the recognized codecs.
Quite a bit of the newer avi-files out there are in h.264 codec and this player with the latest firmware can't seem to play these (codec is not supported).

Are there any plans on making a firmware that also support the h.264 codec ? (I don't know if this can even be fixed with a new firmware but I'm just asking here ^_^)

Other then that the player and new firmware are great... it's just a shame that many of my files are still not suported:'(

    Kind regards,
    K.

Yes, h.264 is not supported (hardware). For this you need a "Media Player" and add a "0" to price....

    @ saintbe
    1) the player can handle only non-HD input formats (720x576)
    2) to support h264 (or any other compatible HD format) you probably need a hardware upgrade !
=> thus a new firmware will VERY VERY likely not/never add support for this codec (on the dvp 5990)
    sorry

    @ all
using latest firmware (CP 1252) i have the following problems
and was wondering if it's just me (=user error), a player problem
    or possibly firmware-related ...
    1) the MUTE button on the remote doesn't work at all, neither for DVD nor Xvid
    2) the last volume setting is NOT stored. after turning the player off/on its on maximum level again (=20) !!!
    3) when playing back DVDs or Xvid files (and maybe other formats as well)
the first few seconds (1-2s) of the audio is missing/muted out

    @ vb6rocod
thx for the GREAT firmware, you really should charge philips for it !!! :)
    but...
    personally i don't have a philips receiver/tv
and i really would like to use the default volume buttons on the remote (for several reasons).
of course i don't want to force this as a default setting to all users
but maybe this could be added as a menu-point in the setup
or released as a separate (sub-)firmware version...

    thx in advance

Well, you should have read the feature list from the 5990 product page before buying the player.

    2) according to Philips support it's not a bug, it's a feature
    3) Nice to see someone else having these kinda problems, although I'm getting this only with mp3 playback

Solution: pester Philips support about it (I did) so they see it's a common issue and release a fix for it.

    @vb6rocod

Thx for the fast reply. I suspected as much...
I guess I'll just save some money for the Markus 800 mediaplayer.

    @Techflaws

I bought the device in a fast decision... they were selling very fast... So I took a risk and payed 80euros for this box. The fact that it says "1080p" on the box is a bit deceiving in my opinion. I read the feature list on the internet when I was at home... the local salesmen weren't very helpful in telling me what the 1080p was all about... YES, I asked them what the 1080p on a DVD-player was for ?_?

    @ALL

This is a very nice DVD player but in my opinion isn't better than the other DivX players out there (that you can get for 30-40 euros) ... the "1080p and ideal for your HDTV" advertisement on the box is a kinda deceiving because the device does not support this for video and for me personaly is a useless feature if it's only usable for JPEG. Oh well ... I needed a new DVD player anyway so it's not a total waste.

Thx for the fast replies everyone.

The player does upscale standard resolution to 1080p so one can watch DVDs on Flatscreens. I wouldn't call that deceiving.

Doubtful. There has to already be support for it within the hardware, for someone to be able to enable it via hacked firmware.

    hi everyone!

is there a chance, to get an usb-hub working with the 5990?
My problem is, that i want to run an external hdd (trekstor) with my 5990, but this harddrive supplies a usb-hub at front. the 5990 (standard-firmware) recognizes this and doesn't allow me to use this hdd.

Does this custom firmware fix my problem? if not, will there be a fix in future versions?

    thanks,

    Bluddy

    Hi,
    thanks !
This is a great firmware improvement and it looks pretty good!
    The "filebrowser" is really awesome.
But i have one Problem, there are just pink lines displayed for subtitle with Divx Video playback.
The file ist divx with .srt file same name.
i tried all different settings for subs but nothing changed. with "original" firmware it´s displayed correct.

Sorry for the bad photo .

Which is this: you don't bother reading threads let alone update procedures which clearly states that the player must be reset in the process.

so i see that the philps with modded firmware is a great player.

can't forget my Yakumo DX4 dvd player with the MTK chipset. the official FW sucked but the modded ones were great.

    which chipset does philips use?

is this the best player for the price - 72eur?

    thak you
