I've been converting uncompressed avis to mp4 and the audio is always out of sync. Used various freeware apps mentioned on this site as well as Squeeze 5. Finally discovered that it's when I playback in Quicktime - the same mp4s playback fine in the free VLC media player...

Is there settings I can change / codec to download that might fix this in QT?

The thing is I'm creating these mp4s for my visitors (who are very non-tech) to download from my website. Are most going to have the same issue as me because the last thing I want to do is try and educate them about downloading additional codecs etc.

    Thanks, Phil.

  2. If you are using QT player to view h.264/aac in .mp4, it only has limited capabilities (does not support some advanced quality features)

QT for windows only supports AVC Main Profile, no mixed reference frames, no I8x8, max 1B-frame, no B-pyramids

If you want easy programmed presets, MeGUI and ripbot264 have profiles that are QT for windows compatible. Xvid4PSP has an AppleTV profile, that features lower settings and should be compatible as well. In terms of ease of use, Xvid4PSP is probably easiest, followed by ripbot264, then MeGUI (which is a bit difficult to setup at first)

Interestingly, Adobe Flash 9 supports pretty much all h.264/x.264 settings (for streaming)

You could also instruct visitors to use Mplayer / SMPlayer, which pretty much plays everything including .rmvb, (even a few things that VLC can't play). It has internal codecs/splitters so it doesn't require installation of anything else
