hello,
i have a bluray collection i want to put on hard drives i was going to convert them to hd mkv's with megui, but i want to watch them on my xbox in media center without having to use tversity transcoder,so what is really better converting blurays to? mkv or wmvhd,iv noticed that wmvhd encoding takes alot longer than converting to mkv, but i want the better quality output,at the moment im using tmpgenc xpress to convert bluray rips to wmvhd, but it lacks decoding the ac3 audio in 5.1 it will only decode the audio in stereo then im encoding stereo to 5.1 wmapro that cant be good can it? converting 2.0 input to 5.11, is there a program i can use even buy that will convert bluray to wmvhd with true 5.1 audio,
hope you can help!

As far as I know the WM container only supports Windows Media Audio and not AC3.
Converting stereo audio to 5.1 is a waste of time in my opinion. It won't be able to give you back the original channel separation that was in the 5.1 mix.
Microsoft lets you download their encoder for free and it can generate WMVHD output with WMA 5.1 audio. There are even a few GUIs for it if you find it hard to use on the command line. More info is available at the forums at

in the New And Alternative Video Codec section. -
thanks for the replies guys,i know the xbox will only play wmv/avi etc,i am using tversity to stream 1080p mkvs but i get the odd buffering issue and im using an amd 2.5ghz quad core, 4 gb ram on a clean network, tversity cant really ask for more than that to transcode! thats why im looking at wmvhd, requires no horse power atall and i can watch my movies within the mce app on xbox.
As far as i am awhere wmv will only allow wav or wma audio codecs,Yes i thought converting 2.0 stereo to 5.1 was a bit silly, tmpgenc will down the 5.1 audio stream to stereo,it only has dobly stereo decoder rights, As for the command line approch on wmvhd encoding i do not have a cluei was trying to avoid this but it looks like i will have to do it that way, thats why i have been using tmpgenc because its user friendly iv been on doom9 a few times and the topics seem to drift off into others areas rather than the topic to be disscussed, and go into a serious amount of pages, which threw me off,but i will look into the command line way of things,is there a basic tutorial for beginners for it anywhere?
Thanks again,
Eao.
