  1. First of all, I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum! Now for my question...

I have started editing DV for a little while now and have gotten comfortable with it. Now I'm ready to create DVDs and share my movies with my relatives. I am somewhat confused with all the different formats so I thought I would post my requirements in hopes many of you would make a recommendation as to what type of DVD writer would work best for me.

    Reguirements:

    Firewire connectivity
Create DVD movies so that my relatives can watch them on their dvd set top players (on their TV)

That is really about it. Seemed simple to start with but I have no idea about the R, RW, +R, +RW, etc.

I'm looking forward to reading everyones recommendations

    Thanks

    Joe

  2. I have a Pioneer A03 (DVD R and DVD RW) which is mounted on a firewire enclosure case. I recommend it because between +RW and DVD R, the latter is cheaper as far as media goes. I also read that that DVD-R I bought a few DVD-R for $2.95 and work fine on the various standalone DVD players.

  3. OOps I accidentaly press the submit button without finishing my opinion. Also another thing that is going for DVD R is compatibility. I read from various PC mags. that DVD R are more compatible than the DVD +RW especially with standalone players. Forget about the DVD +R since they are not even here yet. There is even a doubt if existing DVD +RW will be upgradable to use +R discs.

Although the DVD RW that the Pioneer is capable of burning is not as compatible as the DVD R , it plays fine on my Pioneer 444. This is a good way of testing my DVD videos before committing them on a DVD R disc. One thing that is going for the DVD +RW camp is the speed it burns the +RW and packetwriting. If your concern is mostly compatibility to share dvd discs in the cheapest way, the Pioneer A03 and other DVD R burners (e.g. Panasonic LF ) is the way to go.

  4. get a Pioneer A03 writer....

DVD-R / RW discs are the best for compatibility....they are also gonna cost a lot less, as DVD+R will never be as mass produced....

the only advantage of DVD+R /RW is that you can random access the disc ( like a floppy / hard disc ) so you use it as a removable device....

BUT - whats the point ?

writing to DVD ( + or - ) is very very slow, compared to any hard disc...also the discs are easily scratched......

    for film use - get a DVD-R

for data only, get a DVD-RAM ( best, as has caddy protection )

    Buggs....
