Audio gain in ffmpeg

Hello - I am trying to convert some VOB files to DV or MOV for use in iMovie editing. The sound on the VOB files is poor though and I would like to increase it. The "Audio Gain" function does not seem to be available on ffmpeg. Any thoughts on why, or how to change this?

From the manual on the site:
• Sets the audio gain for mencoder engine. Allowed values are 0..+9.

It's a mencoder engine feature, so it only works when using mencoder presets, not ffmpeg presets like DV or MOV.

The mencoder presets have the word 'mencoder' in the preset name (screenshot).
