I have just decided not to do any encoding or anything and just get my friend to install VLC
thanks for the idea.

1) Open your .avi in mkvmergegui by pressing "add" (it's from the mkvtoolnix kit)

2) Highlight the video track (not the audio track), and go to the "format specific options" tab

3) In the Aspect Ratio radio tab, select from the drop down menu, 16/9

4) Press start muxing

Should take about 1 minute.

If you still want to learn how to re-encode, let me know, and I'll help you out with the steps...
