Man, I need to read the forums more often!

I recorded the opening ceremonies and just ran it through TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress as straight 1080i at 29.97. I'll have to record a small segment and use some of the techniques here.

It still looked pretty good after the encode was done. I tried a 2-pass VBR with 6550 as the average, but it took way too long, so I did CQ VBR with a quality setting of 80. With that setting, I can put the opening ceremonies on one regular DVD and the March of Nations on a dual-layer one.

BTW, I also tried using MediaCoder, and I have just one question for everyone that uses it--how the hell do you get good results out of it?

Even the NBC HD channels? Those are perfect 1080i (59.94 fields per second) here.
They originated 50i by BOB, were edited 50i by NBC, then converted to 60i
I took a closer look and you are right there are some field blending artifacts.

Almost forgot.. here are the demo sample clips of my virtualdub choice to deinterlace my noisy analog cable tv olympic game videos. I watched these on various computer displays and seen differences with each. So, mileage have been various but good never the less.

Note, each clip was capture with the Pinnacle Studio AV/DV on an Windows XP Home system.

Later, after I've had some time to review the HDTV recordings made so far, I'll try and make some demos of those and post up for review or enjoyment (of the games) etc.

Once you see the HD, the SD is difficult to watch. Depends on the event.

Yeah, but I"m still stuck with it for the most part. No sense on going all out if I ain't got an HDTV set.

I think it all depends on the display setup.. the computer graphics card.. and the source and how it was processed, and how everything works together in one's computer display.

I can tell you that I've had the opportunity to view thse clips I posted on three computers, each with different graphics cards and monitors. At work, it was the worse view. And the strange thing about it all was that the monitor was larger and better than my 15" (13.5" view) and viewing the clips on my home computers were much better. So, like I said earlier, it all depends on your computer (viewing) display and your mileage will certainly vary. But also, my analog cable is very noisy. So that makes it extra hard to process and good turn-around in terms of results and good quality. The amount of noise in the feed was too much for the mpeg to reproduce. So, the conversion (deinterlace) did suffer a little bit there, too. I still liked it, and because my source is analog, still, I'll prob continue using it or until I fine-tuned the processes for better results. But I am making some headway in the HD scene. At least I can now watch NBC in all its 1920x1080i glory minus the motion pixels

I've learnt a few new things about this area of video. And working with the analog (SD) version of the olympic games has been an interesting endeavor, and its not over yet. I've got lots of recordings made of this evening games.

So, I can't wait to work on the HD recordings and see where I go from there.

So, on the womens swim, that Natalie is a cutie, (I saw her first) and USA (mens gym) got the Bronze medal. Great!

Man. All my dialup google searches on Natalie C. is turning up nothing, pictorially. She sounds so cute and has a cute -fresh- smile, but I can't match the rest of her .. hair, etc. oh well. maybe tomorrow i'll find some photos of her and see if the cute voice comes with a pretty face -- its cute even with the cap. She has to be a hottie.. has to be.

    Signing off till tomorrow..

    [UPDATE] ...

I'll have to dig through my arson of my Pinnacle PCTV Pro recordings to see if I can find a good closeup in HD of her.

I found a few nice ones with Misty MAY (during one of here interviews) and she looks pretty cute, too.. and so is WALSH.

There's so much good footage that I recorded in HD, and I'm pretty excited about it all.

In this evening's closing ceremony the broadcast seemed to have aired it in full clarity with almost no pixelation. And in the commercial breaks, all the pre-records of the winning matches were also aired in clean non-pixelation format. Well, there were a couple of pixels here and there, but you can be certain that they did not include the same footage of all the pixelated matches in those. I'm glad I recorded those too. At lease I can compare these latest ones to those I recorded during the games. So, it looks like my theory about the broadcasts being pre-treated (or tainted) is true. At least thats the way I'm calling it.

If you haven't recorded the closing ceremony in HD, I don't know.. other than you might have missed out on a few opportunities there.

While I'm at it, I made some improvements in the deinterlacing aspects. I finally arrived at an acceptable method though crude, but works out pretty well. I will post some demos of them (in mpeg because I can't seem to get a good avc/h264 quality low-bitrate encode out of 'vem) when I find the time. The audio is what's giving me the hardest trouble (muxing, etc) because I don't have a one-function-does-it-all process.
