I am new to this subject and this forum, so please bear with me. What is the best and fastest FREE video conversion software for Mac (OS 10.4.11) and where to find it on a safe website to download ? For now, I am interested in converting commercial DVD (.vob) to MPEG to play with QuickTime. I have QuickTime 7.5. Of course, the more flexible the software the better, i.e., convert to other formats back and forth. What about converting HD DVD content? What is involved there?

    Thanks,

Hello welcome to our corner of the world!
    to answer your questions:

    1. HD DVD Ripping isn't currently supported on the Mac.
Eventually, but until it becomes the de facto standard,
(ie. over SD DVD) there isn't much interest in it.

    2. Software for FREE is the wrong way to look at it.
Software that ACCOMPLISHES the task you need done is the much better
    way to look at it.
Nobody makes anything for free worth a damn anymore, tech is
the last "industry" available to us americans.

That being said, top software to encode from DVD (.vob) to
a variety of formats and their costs:

    VisualHub: $35
    ffmpegx: $15
MpegStreamclip: $20 ( for the QT Mpeg-2 Component necessary for conversion)

limited in their ability to handle variety of formats:

iSquint ( free, but limited in scope)
Quicktime Pro ($30 for Pro features, $20 for QT Mepg-2 Component
necessary for conversion, limited by codecs installed on your system)
