Hi there,
I'm making a 2 hour DVD, and have just finished the export of an umcompressed avi to import into encore. Encore won't accept it without some kind of codec, and i'm not sure how to go about putting a codec onto it now that it's been exported.
I used premiere pro 2.0 to do the export. The footage was shot on a DSR 450 DV camera, and has been exported as an uncompressed avi. I assumed encore would be able to handle this for me automatically?

There are many, many kinds of AVI. Use freeware tools like GSpot or AVIcodec to identify the type of codec your exported footage is. Then download the needed codec and install it. However, your Sony camera records native DVCAM and DV. Why didn't you keep the native format for editing? Premiere edits in these formats.

try exporting it as dvd spec mpeg-2 for encore. a vbr average bitrate of about 4500 with one 256 kbps ac-3 audio track should fit a dvd5.

Uncompressed RGB AVI runs about 112 GB/hr. Uncompreseed YUY2 AVI runs about 75 GB/hr. If you imported from a DV camcorder you probably have DV AVI which runs about 13 GB/hr. You may need a FW based DV codec. Try Cedocida or Panasonic DV codec.

No reason to decompress a DV project for this purpose. minidv2dvd describes the normal procedure. Encode to MPeg2 in Premiere Pro and import the resulting file into Encore for authoring. Encore only recodes when the incoming file doesn't meet DVD spec. There are fewer control options on the Encore MPeg encoder.
If you wanted to export from a DV Premiere project to another MPeg2 encoder, DV format is probably the better choice.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
