  1. Is a good DVD-rip better quality than original VHS movie? What is the bitrate of VHS movies?

  4. DivX will probably look better if it is encoded at a high bitrate and the resolution is 640x480.VHS has a resolution equal to 320x240(VCD).
You will also have a cleaner picture converting a digital source to DivX instead of capturing a analog VHS source.

Of course a divx file can contain the 5.1 audio if it has it. Something no vhs copy ever has - dolby pro logic being the best you can hope for.

It fully depends on the sources and recording quality. File formatting itself is completely meaningless.

VHS isn't 320x240, which is less than VCD resolution, that's a a misunderstanding of a myth created by VCD advocates to make VCDs seem better than they are. VCD is 352x240 progressive. VHS ranges from 250x480 to 300x480 interlaced. Even the best quality VCD isn't as good as a EP VHS recording on good tape recorded with a good VCR.
