    i have an avi video that i want to convert to mpeg to work on my dvd player.. is it ok to convert the file from avi to mpeg-2 SVCD?
    i only have cd-r dsks at the moment

    Yes, that should work. SVCD was developed for CD media.

    SVCD is based on MPEG-2, just as DVDs are, but with lower resolution. The result is intermediate in quality between VCDs ("VHS-like") and DVDs. You can get ~40min of good quality video on a standard CD-R. If your movie is longer than that, you can tradeoff quality to enable longer play time, or split the movie among as many discs as you need.
