I am soon getting a dvd player that plays divx and divx ultra. Will I just be able to burn divx files straight to a dvd-r and watch them on my player. If I add .srt files with the same name as the video will I be able to see the subs? Thanks

Yes, if your files are Divx compatible to your player. Just burn the files as a data disc. This info from Jman98 outlines what doesn't usually work with most Divx players:

If it's used during encoding, it probably has 3 warp points and no standalone DVD player at this time appears to support that. Despite some claims to support it, I've seen reviews where 3 warp point GMC was tested and it always failed.
    2) QPel (Quarter Pixel)
    3) Packed bitstream.
    4) Resolutions greater than 720x576.
    5) Video bit rates higher than 2000 Kbps. With some Divx playback chips, if your audio is anything other than MP3, you may have to drop the video bit rate as low as 1400 Kbps or you may have audio playback problems.
Also, VBR audio might cause problems with some players, as well. If your AVIs have any of the above, you might need to modify/recompress them before they'll play on your player. SRT subs are just put in the same folder as the video and should play automatically, depending on your player settings.

I should add that programs like AutoGK and others encode Divx files that are compatible. Most Divx video off the net is also compatible, but you may find a few bad encodes.

BTW, What player did you get? I just picked up a $37US Philips 3960 from Walmart. I haven't tried it with any Divx files, but it plays DVDs well enough.

Thanks for the info. By the way whats with TDA3 doing a full recompress when the files are already divx? I tried using Avi FourCC Code Changer to change the fourcc as suggested here but no luck, https://forum.videohelp.com/topic354198.html?highlight=tmpgenc%20divx ........ And why is it that when I add a 100MB divx file to my TDA3 project, it takes up almost 200MB on the capacity indicator at the bottom of the screen?...........By the way, I went with the Philips DVP5140. It was on sale at Target for US $39.99.

Not sure why TDA3 is doing that. It must assume the files aren't in spec. Try dropping one into Gspot before sending it to TDA and then after TDA modifies it. You may be able to see what it's done and possibly why. If the original plays on your set top player, they shouldn't need modification.
