I need a new movie editor and I am deciding between Sony Vegas 8 platinum and Final Cut Express. Do they both support MPEG-2?
The only thing I hate about Vegas is it has HORRIBLE title making. The problem with Final Cut is my my mac is the less powerful white macbook so it might run slow. What should I choose?

More info needed. What sources are you editing and what results are you trying to achieve?

Final Cut is designed for established pro work flows so the more you try to use it for typical consumer tasks, the more frustrated you will be with it. If you have a pro camcorder (DV or SDI best) and want to make a traditional commercial DVD or deliver an ad, promo or movie on tape, then you are in Final Cut territory.

The Sony DCR-SR45 is a low end consumer MPeg2 camcorder. Vegas will load it from the file or DVD disc using the Import menu. FC will import it as a conventional MPeg2 file.

Vegas Pro is centered in the Prosumer world with ability to move upmarket as needed. Sony formats (DV, AVCHD, IMX, HDV, XDCAM) are favored but you can edit JVC's 720p HDV and Panasonic's 24PA, DVCPro and DVCPro-HD as well but not their AVCHD without conversion.

Vegas will not run on Mac OSX.

I use allot of cool titles, color changes and correction, I rarely use fancy transitions besides fades. I make lots of movies with my friends (one has a Canon XL-2). We dont really post online much. We aren't beginners. We started out using WMM, then we used stuff like ulead/magix/pinnacle and all those kind of editors and we are going up a step in editors. We use Mac and Pc.

I'm familiar with the pro versions of both products but not with what is missing in the "platinum" and "express" versions. Maybe others know these better. If you are working from DV source, either will work.

Check out the features and tutorials at the respective web sites.
