    Hi there,

I'm having problems permanently hardcoding subtitles on to an existing AVI file. I have purchased/registered the ffmpegx software and followed the tutorial to the letter.

I have tried both "DVD ffmpeg" and "DVD mpeg2enc" quick presets and loaded the subtitles in the filters tab and everything seems fine when I preview the file as it shows subtitles perfectly.

However once encoding is complete all that seems to show are an '.m2v' file along with a couple of others and doesn't produce DVD folders at all...I have searched the hardrive to no avail.

I don't know if this helps but i'm all the files i'm using and authoring to are on an external hardrive but i'm assuming this should make no difference.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

The tutorial on the site is for encoding to DVD with soft subtitles (that can be turned on and off).

What are the video and audio codecs of your AVI?
Is your subtitle file text-based (like: .srt)?

When using DVD mpeg2enc (and decoding with QuickTime), the video is encoded first (.m2v), then the audio (.ac3 or .mp2), then both results are muxed into an .mpg file.
When using DVD mpeg2enc and decoding with mplayer, you'll get hardcoded subs.
When using DVD ffmpeg, the video and audio are encoded straight into an .mpg file.
After the video and audio are encoded, the subtitle file is encoded to an MPEG subpicture stream (.s.mpg).
After all that is complete, the VIDEO_TS folder is generated, inside a folder with a name ending in ".DVD".

If any step is interrupted by an error, then the next step may not happen.

Please list the files (filename extensions) that were created with their file size.
Please post the Process Information log, accessible by clicking the blue "i" in the ffmpegX Progress window, as it may hold clues to what went wrong.

The location of the files should not matter. All the output files should be created in the same location (as specified in the Save As field).

Thanks for the reply.....I think I have burnt the dvd with selectable subtitles which will have to do for now...although i cannot check until i get the remote for my dvd player back (long story!).....

Just a quick question though....if i choose to convert an .avi movie to an avi divx movie and load subs will this hard code the subs into the final avi divx file which i can then burn on to dvd?

This would be a perfect solution if possible!

    many thanks

Yes, but you'll need to use a mencoder preset, as burning subs is a mplayer/mencoder feature.
