I have some MKV files which i would like to stream to my PS3.
the problem is when i play the files on my PC i get sound but no picture.
I have tried all the reccomened media players with no joy.
Now i understand my PC may not be upto the job of playing these files. (so a new PC may have to be bought)
This is stange as some of the MKV files are over a year old and used to work on my PC with VLC player.

What i would like to do is play these files through my PS3 but i have to convert them, however if i cannot view the video i assume i cannot convert them to MP4 files as i dont have the correct codecs and my PC cannot handle the files would this be correct?

I've been able to play some WMV files that were VC-1 on my PS3

    VC-1 = Microsoft

At least I think so ...

If I'm correct then try installing WMV from the Microsoft website also make sure you install the newest version of Windows Media Player aka WMP as I think that will install all the needed codecs (knock on wood).

You will probably have to extract the files from the MKV and remux using the Microsoft WMV tools. The audio may need to be re-done to work correctly on the PS3. I used Goldwave to convert to 9.2 WMA as the files I had with VC-1 were using some 5.1 WMA format that works on the XboX 360 but not the PS3. The end result was normal 2 channel stereo audio though ... but I've never been a fan of surround sound anyway so it didn't bother me.

Maybe posting more information about the MKV or the separate files (once you demux) would be helpful.

What version of the PS3 system firmware do you have?

I believe support for playing VC-1 (at least in WMVs) was added somewhere around 2.10-2.17. There probably isn't a way to get the PS3 to play it in any other container (c'mon, Sony, add MKV playback support. Please? :P )
