I've searched everywhere for an answer and I apologize if you've answered this before. Neither my DVDs nor my MPEGs show video but sound plays fine. I've tried WMP, MPC, VLC and WINDVD. I've also analyzed the videos with GSpot and everything looks fine including video CODECS but even on that program audio plays but not the video. The only CODEC pack I have is FFDShow. All of my movies did play at one time and the only thing I've added to my computer since that time are some video games. I would sure appreciate ANY help you might be able to offer. THANK YOU very much!

Explain your problem in detail, like your talking to a dumbass, who has the barest understanding of what you are trying to achieve.

Explain your problem in detail, No! even more detail. If you cant be bothered to explain it why should anybody attempt to answer it?

Specifically what detail do you want? I included all of my hardware specifics in my profile, I described exactly what is wrong and I detailed what software I have installed on my pc including codecs. I'd be glad to add more specifics if you tell me what it is you're looking for. Thank you.

Hello AC, Ummmmmmmm.......! If you want feedback as to why your videos do not play, You will have to tell us How you put the videos together.

Give us details - including the step-by-step process that you use to make your videos.

Include the software and anything else that you use.

Thanks for the response Tug. The DVDs I have are commercial ones I purchased; the others I've downloaded. I didn't put any of them together myself. I don't know if any of the information provided by GSpot would be helpful. If so, I can tell you exactly what CODECs are being used by running them through that application. I'm sorry if I lack the sophistication others here have but I don't do any video editing; all I ever do is watch the movies I have. If this is the wrong forum for my post, please let me know. I didn't know where else to post it so I put it in the newbie section. Thanks again!

Have you ever thought that your dvd-rom/dvd burner may just not work correctly? What is the brand of your dvd-rom or dvd burner? Do those commercial dvd discs play in a standalone player? What brand of dvd media did you use? What burning software did you use? Your first post is a bit vague.

Vlc shouldn't have any problems, so it sounds to be more an issue with video hardware acceleration not working properly
Right click on desktop, select "properties", go to tab "settings", then advanced button down below.
Next, go to "troubleshoot" tab, and check hardware acceleration is at max.

    Now

    1: Uninstall ffmpeg, reboot
2: Locate and upgrade the current video device drivers, reboot
3: Run a directx diagnostics to determine if problems exist with hardware, especially with the video area, and provide all error info
3: Use gspot to determine codecs required for a test clip, then install only those required codecs.
4: Test the test clip video in a number of video players, especially in vlc
5: Report results player by player.

Might actually get somewhere then after going though all this

Did you at any point in time install one of those stupid/dangerous "codec packs"? I'm betting so.

Budz, it can't be the DVD player since I can play audio cds and games. Further, the fact that I cannot play any mpegs makes a hardware failure in my player very unlikely but thank you anyway.

Bjs, thank you for a very lucid and thorough suggestion. I will work through each of the steps today and report back.

Lordsmurf, I realize that people often use elephant guns to hunt quail when dealing with video codecs so it's very common to see them download and install pack after pack only to degrade and complicate their original problem further. I am no video expert but I have always read and researched things thoroughly before installing anything new. There are no codec packs other than FFDShow on my system. Thanks though.

This last comment brought up a good point. Does anyone know how to quickly and easily check what "all" the codecs and codec packs installed on a computer are? I know what is on mine because I'm the only one who adds or removes things from it but I have a friend whose system has also had problems and this type of information might really benefit her.

My thanks to everybody on this site!

Ok Bjs, I've performed all the steps you recommended. I've attached images that will hopefully help to diagnose the problem. I'm sorry there's so much data but I was criticized for not including enough detail so I thought it was better to provide everything I have. If there is additional information needed, please let me know and I will get it. THANK YOU again for all your help.

After running the DXdiag, I dropped a file into GSpot and analyzed it. The first image shows the error due to the fact that I had uninstalled FFDShow. I then only installed the DX50 CODEC which GSpot said was required as per your instructions and ran the same file through again. You will notice that in the second image there is no CODEC error and the file appears to be fine. Finally, I tried to play the movie using various players including VLC where I got only audio but no video. If anybody could help me, I would sure appreciate it. It's been a difficult problem for me.

These are the results from the DXdiag performed:

    One quick idea:

Take a problematic video file, any of which you have used before, and drop it onto mplayer.

If you don't have mplayer, just google it. Download, unzip, and you should see a file labled "mplayer.exe". Take a file and drop it onto that executable. It should pop up with a dialog window and begin playing. Now, that window will have alot of stuff in it. Just copy and paste it into a forum post. It should help us find out what your programs are choking on.

Use GSPOT on a VOB file on a homemade DVD, and let's see what codec is trying to own the file.

You did not answer my codec pack question.

  16. Sounds more like a display driver problem

Uninstall & reinstall your video card drivers

Check your display properties & settings

Hi Merlin. Mplayer says it's for Linux systems and looks like it's for very advanced users. I don't mind trying it if it's as simple as downloading it, installing it and dropping a movie file into it but from the information I read on their site it looks much more complex than that. Is it? My other hesitation is the issue of installing additional CODECS since it looks like that often causes more problem than it solves. What are your thoughts on this?

Lordsmurf, below is a snapshot of a VOB file analyzed by GSpot. All I can tell from it is that the file is using MPEG2. But please tell me what you see that I might be missing. I did answer your question about the CODEC packs. In fact, I asked a question related to your topic because I thought it was a good point. The bottom line in case you don't want to go back and read what I wrote (which is posted directly under your question by the way) is that I have not installed any other packs. I had FFDShow which I removed based on advice received here and then I installed only the CODEC GSpot identified as necessary for running my test file. Thanks for your feedback.

  18. Play a video in two different players at the same time. Does one have a picture the other not? Then your problem is in your graphics card's overlay feature and has nothing to do with codecs. Just go to the setup applet and fiddle with the video (not desktop) proc amp settings.

  20. Since you have VLC go to Settings -> Preferences -> Video -> Output Modules (enable Advanced Options in the lower right) and try different output modules. You have to stop and restart the playback for changes to take effect.

Oh, skip "Image Video Output". It will save the video as a series of PNG files.

And when you said "It unfortunately did not work..." -- what didn't work? Could you play the video in two players? Did one have a picture and the other not?

Mplayer is not for linux only. If you do as I mentioned, and just download and drag and drop a file on there, everything should work fine.

    Here is a link:
    http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php

Just click on the Mplayer/Mencoder link. Unzip the resulting download and drag a video file onto the mplayer.exe applications. That's it. Just post the output.

Jagabo, what I meant when I said that playing two videos at once didn't work was that I still had the original problem. In other words, both programs played audio but not video regardless of which combination I used.

Your last suggestion however, produced some weird, weird results which gave me some hope but completely confused me; perhaps you or somebody else can make since of it. I tried changing the "video output module" selections under preferences in VLC. Some had no effect (e.g. audio but no video), some produced an image which was unwatchable due to what seemed like characters where the pixels should be and very strange colors and others played video although not the best quality. Finally a glimmer of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel! I don't know what this is telling us or how to use this information to resolve the problem but now I'm hopeful. Thank you for this step! Please advise me on where to go from here.

  23. VLC uses only it's internal source filters and audio/video decoders. So the fact that you get no picture with VLC indicates a problem with your graphics card's handling of video.

Yes, one of VLC's output filters use text rather than pixels to display the image. Was the image recognizable (though crude)? That would indicate the MPEG data is being read and decompressed.

Did you try "Windows GDI video outut"? That one should have worked under almost any situation because it's the same thing non-video software does when putting images on the screen. On the other hand, using two players should have worked too because the second player would have to use Windows GDI rather than video overlay.

You originally said you had 300 videos that don't play. Are they all MPEG/DVD? Are some AVI files? WMV files? Do those other types display properly?

This happened to me about 6 months ago...it had something to do with Nero, but I've tried googling the problem and can't find the solution. I know I had to disable or uninstall some Nero file/process and that fixed it. Maybe someone here knows what I'm talking about?

Nero installs dozens of DirectShow filters so that doesn't surprise me.

Ok Jagabo, here's the rundown. Boy, you really have this stuff down cold; that's awesome!

The images that I mentioned with the strange colors are somewhat recognizable as the video; they're just so poor that they're impossible to watch. Very, very crude as you mentioned. I am using "Windows GDI video output" in all my testing.

    Here are the results:
    AVI = Play
    WMV = Play
    DVD = Play
FLV = Play (Although if you try to skip forward, the file closes)
All of the above are somewhat watchable, although with poor quality. Some seem to be a grid pattern of lines that are spaced approximately 1/4" appart running both vertically as well as horizontally accross the screen. On others, the resolution just looks very poor because the pixels look very large.

This next test has a very strange result indeed.
MPEG = Play with poor quality as mentioned above.
MPG = Won't play. Audio ok, video no go.

Thanks for all your help! P.S. I do not have nor have I ever had Nero installed.
