  1. i can't find anything i like to replace mmjb which i've been using since about '98. the yahoo program they want me to "upgrade" to opens enough security holes to drive a mack truck through. here's their required list.

    # Configure the following Internet Settings on your computer:

    * Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options (or Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options).
    * Click on the Advanced Tab.
    * Uncheck the boxes in the HTTP 1.1 Settings section.
    * For Windows XP SP 2 Users, under the Security section, make sure Allow active content to run in files on My Computer is checked (if available).
    * Click on the General Tab.
    * Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button, and click OK in the dialog that appears.
    * Click on the Security Tab.
    * Click the Internet zone icon and then click the Custom Level button.
    * Under ActiveX controls and plug-ins if there is a setting labeled Binary and script behaviors, make sure it is set to Enabled.
    * Click OK to save the changes.

    # Configure any pop-up/ad blocking software as well as software firewalls to permit the Yahoo! Music Jukebox to access the Internet.
    # Update your computer to the latest Service Packs for Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer. Click here.
    # Your Microsoft Windows Scripting Engine may need to be updated. Click Here.
    # Make sure that cookies and scripting are enabled.

i wouldn't open those doors if i did use internet explorer, which i don't. firefox works nicely thank you.

is there a jukebox like mmjb v10 that is still made? winamp isn't my cup of tea and wmp isn't even in the running. foobar 2000 is minor league at best. i don't need much. a decent interface, good mp3 organization, and a way to transfer mp3s easily to a portable device would be nice. no video, no online lookup needed. a music player is really all i'm looking for.

    what do you guys use?

Well if you don't like wmp I guess ZUNE is out of the question. Maybe try itunes? You can use it even if you don't buy songs - just like Zune can work without buying songs. Just something else to check out.

Why do you want to upgrade? I won't use anything newer than Musicmatch Jukebox 7.5.

  4. i need to find something that works with vista. mmjb doesn't, unfortunately. not looking to upgrade, just a working replacement. i still like mmjb...

  5. I actually like Mediamonkey. It's a great jukebox program. Quick, stable and free! Does everything I ask of it.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

Another thing you can also try, if you like using that version of MMJB, is setting it (in Vista) to work in a 'compatibility mode.' Right-click on the shortcut for the program you're trying to run, and select Properties. Then, in the window that comes up, click on the Compatibility tab.

From there, you can set a few options, but the important one is the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" checkbox and its dropdown. If the program works under XP, for example, you can set it to, say, the default of 'Windows XP (Service Pack 2).'

Ever have a look at Foobar 2000 ? I love it, but perhaps it doesn't have the features you need. Lots of 3rd party plugins as well.

  10. i have foobar 0.9.5.4beta 3 but it doesn't seem to like my track tags or something. it takes one artist and divides their work into many lists. can't find a way to collapse an artist into one line either. makes for a long list with 10,000 songs.....

Yup, I with you on that point. I still use Musicmatch Jukebox as well since the interface is simple to use. I'm using version 10 something. It was the best $30.00 I spent back in 1998!

i still have my original v5.0 disk from back then. i never forgave them when they stopped giving free version upgrades, though. the package i bought specifically lists free upgrades for life and the last time my doctor checked i was still breathing(or so he implied).

still looking for a viable replacement..... checking out mediamonkey now.

My copy came with an HP computer in 2000 and it had a known problem so they sent me a download link for 7.0 which I was able to upgrade to 7.5 but every time MM told me there was un update to install, it killed my serial and tried to get me to buy a new one. I keep it and the serial backed up on several CDs just in case I need to reinstall since everytime MM tries to update, it kills the serial#. I never cared for version 8 and up. Too intrusive, always wanting to access the internet.

mediamonkey may be a keeper. thanks ibseeking. it'll take awhile to get used to but it's fast and works pretty well. the track browser took a while to find and set up to my liking but now that it is i will give it a go.

If you want a nice one....and resembles the jukeboxes like you would see is a bar and also set up nicely for touchscreen capabilities the try Freebox.

It used to be free but I think it is $25 now....but well worth it.

...heh...I just went to check it out and the account on the site has been suspended...I don't know whats up but if it comes back online the software is really good...free full function trial download available.

I warned my friend about not upgrading to the new MMJB but he upgraded anyway because he said his version (7.2) stopped tagging his music.

I checked mine and sure enough, Yahoo has killed the online tagging for it. It keeps telling me I'm not connected to the internet. It worked the last time I copied a CD to my PC a month or two ago.

Does this Mediamonkey offer this or are their other programs that offer this.

Yahoo is becoming the scourge of the internet. You can't install anything on your PC without it wanting to install the Yahoo toolbar. I hate Yahoo.

I tried using Windows Media player.. it sounds like CRAP!!! Why? Am I doing something wrong? I played the same song on both and MMJB is so clear and crisp, Windows Media sounds like it's gonna blow my speakers from the noise. Actually.. my test song was so distorted on media that I almost deleted WinMedia over it. I need a MMJB newer version? They keep telling me to upgrade and it messes up my computer if I don't re-start after.

I finally broke down and bought Nordbeat
    http://www.nordbeat.com/dbjukebox/dbj_frame.htm
Looks just like a bar jukebox...will be awesome once I get my touchscreen.
It's a little expensive but if you are going to use it a lot it is worth it.

  20. I use winamp. I have been happy with winamp for several years. It works flawlessly on Vista Business SP1.

Programs like winamp are fine if you are just looking for something to 'play' your music. But if you want a jukebox type program then you need something like Nordbeat. I plan on having a touchscreen hanging on the wall used as a secondary monitor in my HTPC setup.

I am not sure where you are going with this. Using Winamp, I can rip my music. I can play my music. I can rename my music and it can look up information on the artist, and so forth. You can even edit the metadata. That is all the functions of jukebox software. You can even sort by artists or song title.

nordbeat looks like it might be a gui frontend only. requires winamp or wmp to play anything. $50 sounds steep.

i have been using mediamonkey and am happy with it as a replacement for musicmatchjukebox.

I have been following this thread because I have been seeking a Juke Box software program for some time. I like the J.B. functionality of the Nordbeat. Unlike Winamp, et al..it acts like a Juke Box lining up selections and playing in order, as opposed to having to wait until what you selected to finish before you can select more to play.

So...anything like Nordbeat that is free as well as allowing the PC's in the house to interact with one another?

aedipuss hit the nail on the head. Nordbeat does actually require a program like winamp or wmp to run. If you ever go to a bar or someplace like that and you see the touchscreen jukebox hanging on the wall....that is what Nordbeat is like. It can be used with your mouse but is really nice with a touch screen.
This is a type of interface that winamp, mmjb, wmp, etc do not have.

Check out this vid on youtube...watch the HQ version...it takes about 30 seconds into it before the guy really gets rollin.

It is expensive but there are not many choices out there for what I was looking for so it was worth it to me.

If there was something that set up stuff in a queue without killing what has already been selected would be great.

Dude, AFAIK you can do that with WMP.
You can definitely do it with nordbeat, freebox, and any other 'jukebox' style software.
