Hi there. I just reinstalled my Windows XP, and put the codecs pointed as the best choice by Gazorgan in this topic:
    https://forum.videohelp.com/topic191700.html
I can watch the movies with BSplayer.Pro.v1.38.828, but I want to cut some of them into smaller pieces, so I got VirtualDubMod, that previously worked like a charm. Now the problem is that it canīt open most of the files on it. It gives me different errors, like:
    - Error compressing video frame 0: A codec-specific error ocurred. (error code 1)
    - VideoSourceAVI error: bad parameters (8004406a)

And the one that worked, the new file (splitted) had no sound!

I really donīt know how to use ffdshow, but I wanted something simple. Maybe a newbie guide to fddshow or something. My previous klcodec315f.exe codec pack worked fine for me, but the post above says I should not use codec packs.

    Thanks.

open 'vfw configuration' and 'videodecoder configuration' of ffdshow,
wherever you see xvid as decoder,
    change it to libavcodec.

    also get.
    lame acm http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-dshow-acm.php
    and ac3 acm decompressor.

use gspot or mediainfo to check files you're having trouble with.
check yu have a codec setup for what's contained in the media file.
post a screenshot if you still have trouble
