    Hi all.

I'm having a little bit of trouble. My computer which is connected to the main router won't connect to the internet, yet my laptop is still able to connect via wireless router.

Is there anything I can do and check to sort this out ?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. You can check your router settings by entering the configuration. Most have web-based utility where you can change settings. Look at your manual for instructions.

Also check your internet connection settings on your PC. Is your PC wired or wireless connected to the router? Turn it on. Can you see it in the network connections screen?

If your PC is wired, most routers have several LAN ports. Try a different port. Bypass the router momentarily (connect directly to your PC) to see if it's the router that's faulty, or if it's your PC's network card

What Firewall software are you using? I had the exact same problem this week, and it turned out to be a conflict with a recent Windows security update and ZoneAlarm firewall.

  4. Assuming your PC is hardwired to the Router, you should see the link lights on the port where the cable is connected on the back of your pc. If you see the lights (1 solid, 1 blinking), power down your pc and the modem for 3-4 minutes. Restart and check connectivity. This power cycle usually resolves most connection issues.

Other options are avaialbe if this doesn't work.... Rebuild the stack, reset Winsock, etc.

I use Zone Alarm on the pc. Should I try and disable it ? I don't recall any security updates from Microsoft for a while...

Could it also be a virus ?

    Hello there.

What operating system are you running on your desktop?

  7. Zone Alarm released an update today that fixes the connection problem

You can also move the internet zone security slider to "medium" and that fixes the connection problem (worked for me the last few days when it happened)

If you have MS updates set to automatic, you might not have noticed it installing

Ok, I tried disabling ZA, nothing. The automatic updates are set at 'Automatic'

It's Win XP 2003. It's also running very slow too, I do want to do a system restore and clear it out, but I don't have the boot up disc anymore which sucks, so really I'm stuck for other options to get around it.

Has Disk Cleanup and Defrag been run recently? Regularly running these can improve performance. Try unplugging and replugging modem and router cables. Recently my ethernet cable was loose and replugging it fixed the problem for my circumstance.

If you uninstall Windows update KB951748, you will be able to access the internet to install the updated version of ZoneAlarm. You can then re-install the widnows update.
