I'm a computer techie but not much in the realm of video.
My friend brought me a file which he says is a video file but can't play it.
The extension of the file is ".mps". I've done a few searches on google but can't find anything to decode/watch this video with.

Have any of you seen this file extension before and know what I can use to view it with?

Thanks for any help in advance. I'm kind of getting frustrated. I've never failed to figure something out like this before.

  2. get gspot and mediainfo. one or the other should be able to indentify the audio and video properties of the file. if it is video

He said it's for sure a video file. The name of the file is 6866.mp1.mps
gspot and mediainfo couldn't tell me anything about it. I'm wondering if it is a proprietary format of some sort.
    It's about 53GB in size.

  4. try vlc media player. if it can't identify it either then it's probably not video, in the sense that it can be played as a file. ask what hardware created it.

if you have your own ftp server i'd download it and take a look for you, as it's too big to put up most places.

the only other thing i would try is renaming the file 6866.mpg, as .mp1 may imply it's mpeg-1.

Nope, no go on vlc as well.

I found out where he got this from though. It is in fact a video file of some sort. His work uses a service call ClubCom (or something like that) to play music videos over TV's from a computer server. He got this file off of their monthly update and wanted to see if I could find out a way to play it knowing me as always wanting a challenge.

This would have been good info in the beginning because now I'm feeling like it is some type of proprietary video format that they use. But for something like this I'd assume they would still use an mpeg or variation of that.

I have a webserver, just never setup an ftp server on it. Might be something I can do in a few days.

Don't know if it actually contains the correct file as per its name, but .MPS used to refer to "MPEG System Stream", aka MPEG1 .MPG. Try renaming it, or check it in Manzanita's MPEGID.

    Here's the file
I don't even know what this file contains so if anyone is able to play it, I apologize in advance for what it might contain as I don't know.

    9101.mp1.mps

Really smells like a proprietary video format,
and really does not look like any MPEG-stream I have met until now.
Here go the first five bytes of the "trouble":

    Code:
    55 54 56 9F DB
    HTH.

The code is greek to me. Oh well, I'll give him the bad news. I don't even know what he was wanting this for anyway.
