I was doing so well with making my first compilation DVD but it hasn’t turned out as I’d like.

Basically, I’ve got about 50 small videos (mixture of MPG & AVI) and I wanted to make it into one compilation DVD.

    I’m using Nero 8 (Nero Vision 5)

The authoring process went well (file size is only 2GB). However, my problem is that after each video, rather than automatically playing the next file, is jumps back to the main chapter menu which is a pain.

Also, the files in the chapter menu’s are always numbered 1 to 6, irrespective on what menu page I’m on and I can’t see anyway to remove the numbers or make the numbers go all the way up to 50.

I’ve looked everywhere within Nero and I can’t get it right…. I’ve already made 4 coasters.

Should I be using different/better software?

    Any help would be fantastic!

    Cheers, Gina

Lesson 1 : Until you are sure of what you are doing, use DVD RWs. At least that way, if it all goes pear-shaped, it hasn't cost you anything.

Lesson 2 : When it comes to authoring, Nero is not a great tool.

Lesson 3 : The cost of convenience is usually compromise. Few one-click tools will give you much flexibility. You take what they offer, or you learn to do it all by hand.

I would strongly suggest you ditch Nero and give ConvertXtoDVD a spin. It will allow you to create a disc that has proper playback. Burn to DVD RW with Imgburn until you are happy with the results, then commit to a DVD -R disc.

    Cheers!

Will either ConvertXtoDVD or Imgburn allow me to create a menu/chapters too?

I want my DVD to play automatically, all the way through after first item selected or select individual ones as appropriate.

    Regards,
    Gina

ConvertXtoDVD will allow you to create menus, but you will be limited to their templates (with a little flexibility in backgrounds etc) and it will auto chapter at regular intervals, but no manual chaptering.

If you want manual control, Tmpgenc DVD Author is probably the best of the beginner programs, but if you want something free, have a look at GUIForDVDAuthor or DVD Styler

Well if you are happy with the results Nero produces it will do what you want. Nero's menu options are actually pretty decent.

On the chapter numbering tell Nero not to number or untick 'Restart numbering on each page'.

Note I'm using Nero 7 but I assume 8 works the same way.
