I bought one of these on ebay for 20.00 used. I got the ge version. I saw one in the store and it said dial up internet use only. This got me wondering. Does this mean these types of wireless phone jack extensions don't work with dsl service?

Does anybody have realworld experience with these and dsl service? I am wanting to use them so I can move my dsl modem into a room without a phone jack. I also don't want to drill any holes or pay for a professional installation.

Am I out of luck for dsl connection with these extenders? If so I may have to turn around and try to resell this on ebay. Any information would be welcome. Thanks.

  2. DSL is not going to work through those phone line extenders. In fact to make DSL work on a regular phone line you will need to put a DSL filter on that extender. They work for Voice and mostly work for dial up. DSL is neither.

  3. They should work if you install it correctly.

Phone plug ----> Adapter -------Electric installation ----> Adpater ----> DSL modem ====> may NOT work Just try.

Phone plug ----> DSL Modem --->Ethernet Cable ---> Adapter ------ Electric Installation ------> Adapter --->Ethernet Cable ----> PC ===> will work OK.

@Tboneit and cd090580 - thanks. I guess I'll have to find out when I get it.

I am hoping this works. If not I guess I'll have to go and resell it then. I'll report back when I get it.

EDIT - Well looks they don't work. I was able to finally get the unit to work with a plain old telephone in another room that doesn't have a phone jack. Unfortunately I was unable to get my dsl light to go green on my dsl modem. The activity light was working but there wasn't a dsl acquisition.

I'll chalk this up to a loss for now. I'll get around to trying to resell it on ebay someday. Maybe get something back.

  5. It seems you are probably on a tight budget but have you considered a wireless access point connected to the modem and a wireless network adapter in your computer(s)? That's what I do - the modem is in a different building and I can walk around the property with my laptop connected to the network.

Well I can get internet just fine on the pc with my cheapo ativa usb wifi G adapter.

The thing is networking wired to the game consoles for media streaming is the tough part. I was only able to successfuly do it with the dsl modem and wireless router physically in the same room. That entailed using a really long phone cord to get the dsl to the modem.

Would a wireless access point be a seperate connection adapter for the gaming consoles?

I don't need it to get the game consoles online as I have a wifi adapter for the xbox 360 and the ps3 has it built in. THose are ok.

I'm trying to get wired media streaming to the gaming consoles from the vista pc. As I've mentioned in previous posts I can connect the xbox 360 to the pc via a wired ethernet switch. Though I have the net disabled and firewalls offline to get that to work.

Would having a wireles access point enable ip and dhcp distribution between the vista pc and the gaming consoles? What exactly are you calling a wireless access point? Are these free standing wireless routers then?
