    1. At what bit rate the picture of AVI encoded using Xvid or DivX looks exactly same as the source DVD?
    2. Also which converter can help me do this at lowest file size possible?

    1) Impossible to keep the same quality, because it is a lossy codec

    2) The lower the size, the worse the quality, if all other conditions are the same

    None.

x264 or some other h.264 encoder. If you mean of the two, Divx or Xvid, Xvid by a small amount.

I recommend you use Target Quantizer encoding in Xvid. This is a constant quality mode. You select the quality you want (via the Quantizer value) and every video is encoded with that quality regardless of the frame size, frame rate, amount of noise, action, etc.

A Quantizer of 3 is a good compromise between quality and file size. There will be a little macroblocking but you won't notice it at normal playback speeds. If you want even higher quality use a Quantizer of 2. The files will be larger. For lower quality and lower file sizes use 4 or more. You can also use decimal values like 2.5.

If you want the best quality encode with the same frame size as the DVD 720x480 NTSC, or 720x576 PAL. Use the MPEG4 Display Aspect Ratio flag in Xvid to set the playback aspect ratio. Not all devices support the DAR flag though.
