I've never really played around with video before but I thought it'd be a neat challenge to get a file to play on my PS3 and HDTV. The video in question is 720p that was encoded in DivX, dunno the audio codec. I ran it though MeGUI to transcode it into x264 and AAC.

From there I remuxed them into an MKV with an additional ASS subtitles and attached some fonts. File played fine on my PC, no audio sync issues or anything. I created an Avisynth script and changed some settings in FFDShow and Haali Media Splitter to create a hardsubbed version for the PS3. I ran the Avisynth script though PS3 Video 9 to make a 30 second test clip. There was an overscan problem and the subtitles were sinking below the bottom of my TV. After a bit of digging I learned how to add a border with Avisynth and, after a little trial and error, got a test clip with subtitles that didn't spill off my TV.

All the prep work complete, I went to encode the whole video but when I went to play the finished video on the PS3 it throws the error message “The date type is not supported (800288BE)”. I didn't change the settings at all so I don't understand why it would play a 30 second mp4 but not the final version.

    Any theories?

You could have created an .mp4 from your h264 and AAC audio with Yamb..
Or with XviD4PSP using the PS3/Xbox360 format...much easier than the steps you're using IMO! and works great...
