    Dear Friends,

I just got a new HP Pavilion dv9700t laptop with HP's adaptation of of Windows Vista Ultimate that also includes HP's QuickPlay. The problem that I'm running into is that, using VideoLAN, I can't open and play a commercial Region 2 movie DVD ("Taxi Driver"), bought in France. (I'm in the U. S. A.) Apparently there is some sort of incompatibility involved with VideoLAN.

    Anyone familiar with this problem?

    Regards to all,

Maybe is your vista or dvd reader region locked to region 1?(or does other region 2 dvds work?) You can use anydvd, dvd43 to unlock the regions.
What happens when you try play it with VLC? What error message?

    Dear Baldrick,

"Maybe is your vista or dvd reader region locked to region 1?"

On inserting a Region 2 DVD in the optical drive I receive a message in QuickPlay (which automatically loads) telling me that I need to change the setting of my optical drive to Region 2. I can do that but prefer not to so. If it becomes necessary any time in the future to do that I'd like to have available and in reserve as many changes as possible. Anyway, to avoid that problem, I downloaded VideoLAN. AND I am able to play Region 2 DVD's on an older HP laptop (Pavilion dv4000) that has Windows XP on it but that has QuickPlay as a separate feature not connected to XP.

"(or does other region 2 dvds work?)"

    No.

"You can use anydvd, dvd43 to unlock the regions."

If there is no solution to the problem using VideoLAN I'll have to check that out.

"What happens when you try play it with VLC? What error message?"

No error-message appears. I click on the play-arrow of VideoLAN, with QuickPlay installed or uninstalled, and the DVD simply doesn't play. I had a long session with Hewlett-Packard tech support, during which QuickPlay was uninstalled, but still no success with VideoLAN. I was then told that VideoLAN --at least the 0.8.6h version of it-- won't work with Hewlett-Packard's OEM version of Windows 64-bit Vista Ultimate.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks for your interest.

    Regards,
