  3. If the movie will play in media player try this:

    Open TMPGenc
    Goto Options,
    Environmental settings,
    VFAPI plug in,
Set "direct show multimedia file reader" to priority 5 by right clicking on it.

This worked for me when I got "cannot open or unsupported" error.

Let me know how you got on.

    Good luck.

    Don't waste your time.
Tip one for downlloaded files: CHECK EVERY FILE. Open in virtualdub and play the file to the end. If the file comes up with an error then you have a frozen frame.

This happens more than you think. almost all video I download has a frozen frame(s).

If it does, download the avidefreeze(divxdefreeze) program from tools on this website and read the tutoral then fix the frame(s) then encode.

    Problem solved
By the way if anyone else is listening this is why TMPGenc is not responding in the task manager.
I figured this out with all 2 weeks of my converting experiance so pass it along to all that you can reach.
I say this sarcaticly because I see posting all over on this issue and no one has an answer just try this, try that, or my favorite answering you with a question. 10:1 it a frozen frame.
Sorry for venting on your thread.
