All of a sudden I can't download files. I tried to download image burn and one other tool. Both times I get a message that my "Security Zone Policy" won't allow the download. This is new. Happens both in IE and Firefox. Must be an XP setting? Anyone know what is happening?

Seems to be a Firefox 3 problem. I have not found a simple fix yet. People are reloading that I no longer have and can't download. Catch 22. I will get it in time. I just can't download an .exe file until I find a fix!

Any other .exe problems? Had a virus that effected .exe files. Have you tried a system restore to a previous date?

I found the problem and have a fix. (First one on the internet right here on VH.)

When you download FireFox 3.0 be sure that IE Zones are set to default levels. In IE, goto Tools: Internet Options; Security - and "Reset Zones to Default Levels". That puts the sliding bar in about the middle. If your Zones were set at "High", like mine were you will have this problem. Mine were set at high because I don't even use IE at all ever.

Microsoft does not even recognize microsoft.com when the level is set at "High". Try it and see for yourself. Set the level at "High" and try and do a Windows update. It won't work. Windows sees microsoft.com as a suspicious site just like it see's FF3.0.

I am now able to download *.exe files again in IE. Next I will reload FireFox 3.0 if required.

Which is why I uninstalled Firefox 3.0 when it was first released. First time I installed it I got a msg saying AVG 8.0 isn't compatible or something. I uninstalled AVG 8.0 the other day since it's a memory hog. That's why I had such long loading times for my pc and with hotmail. I haven't tried Firefox 3.0 again. I'm still using the last 2.0.0.14 version.

at zone level high you have everything disabled - including activex, so obviously "microsoft" does not "recognize" its own windows update page since it is based on activex. At such level you can only view simplest pure html pages (good luck finding any like that nowadays).
It is not a problem with windows or IE or FF per se - it is actually very *proper* and expected behaviour (of Windows with IE).
When you were setting zone level to the maximum 'protection' (high) you should have read what it actually means and how it affect entire OS environment. Perhaps MS is to blame for not adding some pop-up warning, but it still doesnt release user from educating themselves before they do crucial changes to their OS' settings.

The only problem here was user, as usually (nothing personal videobread or picking at you - just stating the facts, because really most of the time I help people the problem usually was caused by their indolence or lack of knowledge or misinformation).

OTOH I wish Msoft would ditch those stupid zones once and for all.
It drags with windozes since IE4 introduction and even though at first I also thought it was good idea I have very quickly learned it is not - because it is only a reminiscence, just a 'byproduct' of IE4's integration into OS that happened since Win98. IE can work perfectly as standalone app, all windowses were countless times proven to work perfectly fine without any IE either (despite what MS says), so whom are they fooling... the worst part of it is that zones work only with IE while affecting entire OS when non-default browsing-related software is used (I didn't say "browsers" because zones affect many aspects not just the web browsers - networked resources etc)
