I have an AVI that I want to put a border around it to compensate for overscan. I will then demux and import into DLP2. Is there a way that virtualdub can do this without re-encoding? Is there a program that can?
I have TMPGEnc 4 express for conversion to DVD complaint elementary streams. Can this program do it?

  2. Hi-
If it's an AVI and you're planning on making a DVD out of it it's going to be reencoded anyway, so I don't quite understand the question.

You can frameserve out of VDub into your MPEG-2 encoder. You can make a lossless version of your AVI in VDub, and then use that in your encoder. Or, best of all, you can create an AviSynth script and frameserve that into your MPEG-2 encoder. All of these ways will allow you to resize for DVD and add the black around the outside.

There are also some all-in-one conversion programs that will add the black you want before encoding. I don't know if you can do it directly in TMPGEnc as I don't use it, and wouldn't use it anyway for resizing and adding the black, but I bet some others around here would know.

I plan on using TMPGEnc 4 express to convert the AVI int DVD complient video and audio streams. TMPGEnc will crop but not re size with borders. I don't know anything about Avisynth but if its the best way it would be great to learn how. Are the any Avisynth guides for that purpose?

  4. TMPGEnc can resize and add borders (at least my 'old' version 2.59 can do it)

Use FitCD to generate your avisynth script. Just load up the avi, tell FitCD how big you want the border to be, save the script, then load this into your encoder.
