I am new to this software. I have imported 3 mpg files (A, B and C) and now I want to create a sub-menu to A with 6 chapters. I have created the chapters before hand and then I right-click on the thumbnail for A and I am asked how may chapters I want, 6 I write and 6 thumbnails are created. If I now go back to the Menu page 1 I now have 4 (!) thumbnails, my original A, B and C plus one that is called "Scene selection". If I try to delete the original A thumbnail the Scene selection button works, but not the chapter thumbnails. What am I doing wrong? All I want is 3 thumbnails, where clicking on 2 leads straight to the footage and the third leads to a sub-menu where I can choose which chapter I want to see.

    Did you read a manual?
The way it works is that when you create sub menu for chapters it will insert icon in main menu to link to your sub menu.
You cannot delete any of 3 icons for A,B,C titles since they link tom each of the titles you have.

This is a site for a manual:

Well of course I have, thanks for that! What I cannot understand is why I have a 4th button when I add a submenu which I do not have before (see the attachment). What I want is 3 buttons (3 clips) and when I click on one click it then leads to me a page with chapters for that clip only.

4th button is the link to a sub menu you made for chapters.

I do not think that you can do it with this software, because it does not allow you to make a connection by yourself.
I use DVD Lab, which is little more flexible for things like this.
The way around this would be to leave sub menu and delete Scene Selection icon, compile DVD.
Than use PgcEdit(free) or DVDRemake(not free) to change command for A movie (assuming it is a first Legend, which I hope you can rename to what you want) to direct to sub menu for chapters, but than you will loose play the movie, unless you use chapter1 for that and rename it PLAY, because first chapter usualy start at the beginning of the movie.

Just checked the Manual and there is a section "Using Scripting" which talk about using commands.
You can read up on that part.

But even with just one track I still get the extra button if I want chapters. Am I supposed to understand that this represents the PLAY and CHAPTERS buttons you find on a bought DVD?

I am not sure if you are talking about my option or in general.
If you make a chapters for any track, software will make a sub menu where your chapter buttons are and a button in main menu (MENU1) to link to that sub menu.
    That is how DVD work.
As I read from the manual. For every track with chapters, there will be a sub menu with chapter buttons(list) and one buton for each sub menu in main menu.

Thing is if I use TMPEnc DVD Author and I add 2 tracks the first page shows the 2 tracks (see attachment). If I click on either of them it leads to a 2nd page with chapters.

I cannot comment on what is each software doing, because they take different approach to DVD creation. They are both template based software, not much flexibility or your own input.
If you look at commercial DVD they use first page for main navigation, from there you can choose to play a movie, go to a chapter menu or other supporting menus. So from there I would say DVD Creator is close to that approach.
If you are in trying state, try DVDLab, they have different version like regular, Pro and Studio.
I use Pro version and that one is very flexible as to DVD creation.
