I have a full dvd on the computer with English, French and Chinese subtitles. The English subtitles are abysmal and I'd like to replace them with what was supposed to be a .ssa subtitle file I downloaded. The file has a .txt extension with start times for each line but no durations.
If I try opening the file in Subtitle Creator to convert to .sup format the message "Error reading subtitle number 1 (Input string was not in a correct format)" appears.
If I try converting the .txt file to.srt in Subtitle Workshop the end time for each subtitle is the start time of the next one.
Is there a simple way of converting the .txt file to a usable format?

    Here we are:

    00:08:43:The sea is freezing.
    00:08:45:What ever you say.

Try this: Open the .txt in SubtitleWorkshop, select all (Ctrl+a or edit - select all). Go to edit - timings - automatic durations and play a bit with the options there - it will give you end times for all subtitles based on the length of the text. Save as .srt or whichever format you prefer.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Thanks a lot traskmannen, I just used the default settings for 'automatic durations' and it worked perfectly. Really must try and learn how to use Subtitle Workshop better. Thanks again.

  6. Not any format that I recognize.

Try converting to SRT, then running the "fix" function. There is also a program called Subtitle Wizard, or Sub Magic, that may be able to insert gaps between the entries.

SFAIK you need about 0.20 seconds between entries, not usre if there is a precise spec on this.
