    Boilsoft's splitter works for most video that I need to split but it doesn't like Variable Bit Rate mp3's. So then I found this generically named "AVI Splitter" that *will* split avi's with VBR mp3 audio but that works for only avi's as far as I can tell. I guess the only other problem i've had is that some wmv9 files can't be loaded in Boilsoft for reasons I can't understand. Some wmv9 files will load and I can split them, others give me an error message. I could be using Virtualdub I suppose but I'm using a lowly pentium 3 500 mhz so I don't know if Virutal Dub will work or not. If it did work, does it support ffdshow? Oh wait I think that's an option right in the ffdshow install, heh.

  2. if you think about wmv files than I suggest to get Movica to do this!

  3. Howdy,

    I had the same issue you did, and was really cheesed by the Boilsoft splitter VBR dysfunction! There's a whole bunch of solutions available here:

    http://www.qweas.com/store/splitter_joiner.htm

    I have only tried Fast AVI/MPEG Splitter, which is a successful solution to our needs. If you try Allock Video Splitter, you will see it's the same software, enhanced, but I only need a pared-down splitter, and don't like having the result default to .avi re-encode. Your choice.

    There are dozens more listed here, and I'm working my way through them, but so far, there is at least the above-mentioned guaranteed solution available.

    Lastly, I found this software called SolveigMM Splitter. It does not support MPEG-1, which sucks for my purposes. I haven't tried all its functions out yet, and won't bother (at least until after I try all the other software at http://www.qweas.com/store/splitter_joiner.htm site for a better solution) because it doesn't support MPEG-1. HOWEVER, what blew my mind about Solveig, is that it allows multiple markers to be placed at will on a single large file and with a single "go" cuts the file into all the individual scenes. There is also batch splitting possible. With it, I should be able to do the following (on all formats, except sadly not MPEG-1 video for some reason):

    1. Open a large file, and mark up all the segments/scenes in it that I want trimmed;
    2. Add that job to a batch job queue;
    3. Open the next large file and likewise mark it up and add it to the batch queue;
    4. Do likewise for a total of several large movie files (for example);
    5. Click "go" and go to bed; and
    6. Wake up with 50 or 60 cut scenes in the destination folder that originated from the several original movie files, because it did a batch job while I counted sheep.

    Wow! If true, what awesome functionality. All it would need to do is also support MPEG-1 and it would be perfection. I will continue searching for a software with the functionality of Fast AVI/MPEG Splitter, which is to say, a solution to the Boilsoft dysfunction, but also the "single go" multi-scene cut or possible batch functions of Solveig.

    Please do likewise, and if you find such a gem, post about here, as I will. Meanwhile, Fast AVI/MPEG Splitter (or possibly some other programs at the site I've mentioned here) will solve your problem. It might be a solution to have SolveigMM Splitter for all the non-MPEG1 video files we do, so we can use the batching feature, and a second software just for MPEG-1 (like maybe some freeware splitter for just MPEG1). If you have already paid for and have Boilsoft Splitter, then you've got an excellent MPEG1 splitter. Now just get SolveigMM Splitter. I would prefer both in a single program, though, as I have not purchased Boilsoft. For me, maybe there is a good freeware MPEG1 splitter?

    If you want to futz around with SolveigMM Splitter trial version, get it here:

    Hope this helps!
