  1. What is the most convinient way to swap a HDD? No opening the case, no screws.

External HDD data transfer via USB is slow in comparison with directly IDE. But I can not find an IDE ribbon long enough for it to hang outside the case.

Any other options? What about one of those HDD tray things for the CD drive bay? I never had one. But it looks like it can be pulled out, have the HDD swapped, and shoved back in. Opinions?

I have a few of those. The only complaint is the ones that I have are not hot swappable. You also have to pay attention to the setup of the hard disc, to ensure the computer sees the drive. Other than that: They make a nice means of moving large files around.

Get a PCI card with eSATA connector such as this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132007

Then you can either buy external eSATA enclosures or something like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392022

Of course, you'd need some SATA drives to go along with it. eSATA speeds are as fast as internal drives.

I've been debating getting one of these:
    ThermalTake BlacX ST0005U
    http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1268&ID=1731

They look quick to swap (SATA) hard disks, and with eSata should have good data transfer speed.

Those trays work ok, If you have each hard disk in it's own tray (You need to screw the harddisk into the tray - ok you don't have to, but its recommended). But when you buy the holder, you only get one tray with it.
Also, they aren't hot swappable from what I recall.
