I have an .avi file that I have managed to encode and burn to DVD using Roxio Toast 8.4 but now find that it plays with sound but no picture. I suspected that this file was corrrupt due to the difficulty in Toast accepting the .avi file to encode in the first place. I had to use D-Vision 3 to check and mend any errors which it did prior to encoding. It then took about 15 mins to pre-register in the Toast window. I can preview the "fixed" file using VLC perfectly ok with both sound and vision so what do I have to do for it to encode correctly? I have tried to play it using Quicktime on my Mac and it again plays just sound but without picture - just black! Can anyone help please?

What info does VLC give about the video? (Or, you can try the Mac version of MediaInfo - the link should be somewhere on the VideoHelp Tools page autolinked above, but I'll go ahead and include it here: http://massanti.com/mediainfo/ )

You might not have the necessary Quicktime components to view the video. VLC uses its own internal codecs, and doesn't depend on Quicktime.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

Info here but means nothing to me I'm afraid! Can you see anything amiss?

Also as Quicktime is the default viewer on a Mac can these necessary components be downloaded from Apple?

    Thanks

Ah, a DivX 3 video. That explains it.

No, you can't download the necessary components from Apple, but there are a number of third-party Quicktime components available. Perian (http://perian.org/ ), for example, might help in this case.

Have downloaded Perian and installed it but still no progress. When I click the avi file to preview I get the message "you cannot use this application with this version of Mac OSX." I am running Leopard 10.5.3 - will this effect it, and are you saying Perian installs components into Quicktime automatically? I can see Perian PrefsPane sitting in my library but I'm not sure what it is doing there! Or am I missing something?

    Edit:
Also if Perian updates Quicktime will it update Toast also i.e. do they both benefit from the same Perian component - accepting that I have done everything ok? Or should I look for another application for encoding/burning? I always thought Roxio was the biz! .. mmmm.....
